childcare question- references

So we've found a lady in our neighborhood who is just starting to do childcare in her home.  She's a certified teacher who taught for 15 years before staying home with her own kids, who are now in high school.  We clicked with her immediately and really like her and think that's what we're going to do for our childcare once I go back to work in January.

She gave us a list of references to call, which I need to do this week.  But I have no idea what to say or ask the references.  Any ideas?

Also, do you think we should do a background check on her and her husband?  My dad suggested this, but not sure if it's necessary.  Thoughts?

Re: childcare question- references

  • Background checks are pretty standard when it comes to private home child care. Not that you would find anything, but just for your own peace of mind. References can lie and there are a lot of crazies out there.

The people who serve as my references have told me that most people ask them how long I worked for them, what my duties were, why I left, any issues that may have come up while I worked for them, their overall opinion of my character. Just basic things that would let the employer know how well I would fit with their family dynamic.

Good luck! I hope everything checks out and this lady works out for you. She sounds great!

  • That's tough.....I'd maybe ask a double questions first warming up with what things they liked the most about that dayhome, then what things were that they maybe didn't care for as much to try to get some honest answers.
