Have we talked about 50 Shades of Grey yet?
I don't know if this was lost in the great Nest Clusterf*ck, but have we talked about this book yet?

Good timing as I just finished the third book last night.
The first one was OK, the second one actually held my interest because of the situation with Leila and development of Jack Hyde, plus the interference from Mrs. Robinson.
The third one just felt repetitive. I got tired of how much she gasped when he kissed her (seriously, I love kissing, but no need to gasp every time he touches you) and how controlling he is.
The dirty parts werent' all that shocking, save for a tiny bit in the red room. But they went at it SO MUCH that I found myself skimming those parts to get back to the actual plot.

I'm about half way through the first one.
Spoiler alert:
I just finished the part where she had her first spanking. It had me very upset, I didn't like it at all and I'm sort of put off by the book now. I"m going to keep reading though in hopes that it gets better.
Ditto. The writing is bad and that was distracting. And I also found the first book to be kind of disturbing and I really wanted her to leave him. The 2nd and 3rd got better for me though! Overall I thought that they were entertaining in the same way that the Twilight books were. I know that the characters are based on Bella and Edward, but I didn't really get that, I saw them as completely different.
I just finished the 2nd book at the beach... perfect beach read! I am just excited because I have been reading textbooks for the past 3 years and I was glad for something smutty to come along that everyone was talking about.
After Book One, I really wanted to get Book Two and see what happened, but I'm not in such a rush to get Book Three. I am amused and incredulous about how often they have sex and how she's instantly a sexual goddess after being a virgin and never even having a real boyfriend. But it is fun to think about a super sexy billionaire sweeping you off your feet (too bad he's a control freak). And the writing doesn't bother me too much, I just take it for what it is... do yourself a favor and visit the blog "50 Shades of Suck." She posts quotes from the book out of context and comments on them... like that Ana raves so much about drinking orange juice the book must be sponsored by Tropicana, ha.
I read the first one and I'm currently on the wait list at the library for books 2 and 3. Book one was good, but I didn't get why the whole, "BAN THIS BOOK!" movement. It's a book and people have sex in it. I'm pretty sure that's been done before and it'll be okay.
I do, however, have no idea how Hollywood will make this a movie because there is quite a bit of sex in it and I just don't see that happening in order to appeal to a mass audience.
The Sex: I'm amused that it causes so much pearl-clutching. I think the people who are so shocked by the sexual content and S&M are terribly sheltered and I feel sorry for them.
The Writing: I think it sucks. It's less about the quality of it, which I'm not terribly snobbish about in my books, but it's more about the repetitiveness of it all. I wanted to stab myself in the eye with a spork if I had to read "inner goddess" one more time.
The Twilight bent: I hate Twilight and if I'd known that it was Twilight fanfic, I probably wouldn't have ever picked it up. But I was halfway through the first book by the time I learned that and I was already curious as to where the story went.
Overall: I don't think they're excellent but I don't think they're terribly, either. I think the freaking out on both sides of the spectrum (the book banners and the ones spewing vitriol at the mere mention of 50SoG, I'm looking at you Nest Book Club posters) is ridiculous.
Thank you for this- hilarious!
Oh and if they do manage to make them into movies, which I think they probably could, pretty sure I'll see them
Ha ha.
