Hello! I was going to post this question on the S. Jersey board, but it appears to be dead, so I was hoping maybe someone here could help me. We go to Avalon, NJ every year for vacation, and this year we were thinking about heading down a day earlier than we check into our beach house to avoid some of the horrific traffic that we've encountered in previous years.
Does anyone know of some smaller areas/towns to search for hotels? I really don't want to fork over $175 for just one night (which is what I'm seeing in places like Atlantic City or Ocean City) so I was thinking maybe trying to find some smaller towns would be a good idea. We'll be driving from PIttburgh, so we take the turnpike to 42, then the atlantic city expressway to the garden state parkway.
Thanks so much!!
ETA-I just realized that my post title kind of looks like I have a question about the Jersey Shore show...oops. Hopefully that didn't scare people away!
Re: Pittsburgh nestie with a Jersey Shore question
Places located in the shore points are likely going to have minimum stays of more than one night. I do think you should check out the places on the mainland as an option--there are some chain hotels in Somers Point (like EconoLodge) that would likely have no problem with a one-night stay.
Parallel to the AC Expressway is the Black Horse Pike (Rt 42, becomes Rt 322). I just did a quick search and it appears there are quite a few different national chains along the route. Also, you will have no problem finding one adjacent to the AC International Airport (which is 13 miles outside of AC).
Hope this helps.

It is just south of the AC Expressway, I think it is the 2nd exit after you get on the Garden State Parkway. The hotel is easily accessible from the GSP at the Tilton Road exit (exit 36). I believe Avalon is exit 13, so you about 23 miles to drive in the AM, but it shouldn't be too bad. You can see the GSP from the hotel, so you can tell if traffic is insane that day.
What I would recommend as an alternate is taking Route 9 south and/or the Ocean Drive (driving from Ocean City, through Strathmere, Sea Isle City, to Avalon). While this is the most "local" of the routes, if you and the kiddos need to stop and get out of the car, you are in the middle of a shore point and not a highway.
