We just booked flights for our Europe trip. Planning to visit Germany, Croatia, Budapest, and Prague. Croatia sounds amazing from everything I have read, but Dubrovnic seems difficult to get to. Anyone been and have. Any recommendations on an itinerary, getting around, cities that you thought are a must see?

Re: Croatia
How much time do you have allotted for this trip and what time of the year will you be traveling?
I have visited Budapest and Prague and spent 4 days in each city, including a day trip in each (Danube Bend while in Budapest & Kutna Hora while in Prague.
I have entries in my old travel blog on both Budapest and Prague where you can look at all of the places I visited.
Unsure of where you want to visit in Germany, but if you are only wanting to visit Dubrovnik within Croatia, then you could probably spend 9 of your days in Germany, 4 in Prague, 4 in Budapest, and then 3-4 in Dubrovnik.
I assume it would probably be the fastest to fly into Dubrovnik. Check out Which Budget to see potential flight patterns. You might have to have a layover.
If I were you I would probably leave Croatia for a separate trip (we plan to go next year and will be spending at least 2 full weeks in the country) and then you could focus on either nearby areas (Austria, more time in Germany and Czech Republic, etc). However, you have a ton of options so you first need to figure out exactly which cities you want to visit in order to prioritize.
We spent quite some time in Croatia and Dubrovnik. You can check my blog here.
We also loved Budapest. Have fun.
We didn't have time to get all the way to Dubrovnic, so we went to Split instead. We loved Split, but having not been to Dubrovnic, I can't compare the two. Here was our itinerary:
Fly into Ljubljana, Slovenia--3 nights
Bus to Lake Bled--2 nights
Train to Zagreb, transferred to bus to Plitvice--1 night
Bus to Split, 3 nights
Overnight train(s) to Budapest--3 nights
Train to Eger--2 nights
Back to Budapest for one night and then flight out.
My husband is from Croatia.
His parents recently moved back. We spent 3 weeks there in 2009. We never made it to Dubrovnik, but we will be sure to go there next time! We spent most of our time around Split since we stayed in his parents house on an island near there. Other cities we saw were Trogir, Rijeka, and Sibenik. Krka national park was beautiful. The 3 wks went so fast that we didn't make it to many cities. We had driven to Venice and Bosnia though as well. It is a beautiful country. I think it is best not to feel rushed during your trip though. Split would be slightly closer. Have fun and drink a macchiato for me.
Split, Trogir, Rijeka, and Krka.
