Puppy with Parvo...help!

We adopted the sweetest little puppy less than a week ago from a shelter, she was a rescue dog from another shelter that typically euthanizes...long story short she was very sick yesterday, vet diagnosed her with Parvo and said based on when we got her and when she got sick she did get it at the shelter.  Good news is she is doing much better and will be fine.  All the articles say bleach is the only thing that kills the virus...and to be honest we simply cannot bleach our entire home b/c of flooring materials and furniture.  We scoured every bit of the floor with hot water and antibacterial disenfectant but I was curious if anyone has other suggestions?  We threw out all of her toys and bleached the non porous ones including her crate and bedding.  I did bleach areas in the grass as well that she did her business in.  What else can we do?  This sounds like an uphill battle and like I mentioned, we really cant bleach the whole house...  :(

  • I'm pretty sure Odo Ban, from Sam's Club and Walmart, kills parvo.

As for the yard, I'd put some in a hose attachment and spray the whole yard.

Glad your little one is on the mend.  Also, contact the rescue so they know and can clean accordingly.

Parvo can stay in the environment for a very, very long time! Even once the dog is healthy, they can still shed the virus for up to 30 days (if not longer). It is a nasty, nasty virus that takes a lot of work to properly take care of.

Whenever we have a parvo puppy in the clinic we bleach everything!! We ask that the client not put the puppy on the floor and they they themselves not touch anything. Once they have left the building we bleach the entire building including ourselves. We mix bleach in a spray bottle with water and go to work! Everything, whether touched or not, gets bleached because there is no point in taking the risk of spreading it any more.

I would recommend bleaching anything you can and keeping the dog as secluded as possible in the house. Even though the dog is on the upswing of the disease, it can still be spread and you wouldn't want to pass that on to other dogs. The virus is spread in the feces so anytime the dog goes #2, pick up the feces (with gloves), dispose of in plastic bags, and spray the area with bleach water! Don't allow the dog to have any contact with other dogs and when people come to your home make them bleach their shoes before they leave so they don't take the virus home with them!
