International Flights

Hey!  I'm flying internationally for the first time, and I'm pretty nervous about making sure I get to the airport on time and having everything.  I'll be flying from McGhee-Tyson to Vancouver International and back with the same airports.  I know I need my passport, but is there anything else I need?  Also, do I need to get to the airports that much earlier?  Thanks for your help.  I really appreciate it!

Re: International Flights

  • There is a general recommendation to arrive at least two hours prior to departure for an international flight. Are you flying direct?

Sometimes the airline requires that an airline employee looks at your passport, even if you swiped it at a kiosk to check in. But this varies by airline/airport/who knows what else. If you see a big line of people at the desk at the gate this is probably the case.

  • We're not flying direct.  We will have a short layover at O'Hare in Chicago.
  • the rule i make for myself is 3 hours before departure. then again i go from jfk so i leave the extra time for traffic, security, check in etc....

i'd rather have more time at the airport than worry about missing a flight or having an issue.

  • Depending on the time of day you're leaving, arriving 2 hours before should be fine as long as you've checked in online.  Are you checking bags?  If not you can print your own boarding pass and go right through security, showing them your boarding pass, passport and sometimes additional photo ID.
