Can/should I use my iphone 4s as a camera/ipad in Italy?

We have iphones via Verizon.  I also have an ipad, but it is technically work property.  I would really like to take the ipad with us to Italy, but I obviously don't want to for liability reasons.  The reason I want to take the ipad is to use free wifi at our hotels, etc. to look at maps, help navigate, and do research about our next day's activities.

We do not plan to make any calls or texts, however, can we just take our iphones and turn off all calls/texts, etc. and soley just use it as a camera throughout the day and then as an internet resource when in wifi?

Do I switch it to "airplane" mode?  Or is there something else I need to do? Will this avoid roaming/data charges?  Any other recommendations?

  • My husband did this with his iphone on our trip a couple of weeks ago.  You just turn the phone to airplane mode.

  • Great!  Thank you!
  • I did this recently but I will caution you to be careful using those items in the public.

expensive electronics and phones might make your a target for thieves in tourist areas (ie the most likely places you want to snap pics)

I saw a guy on a bike take a phone from a woman's hand in a crowded market once.

If the phone is in airplane mode, it won't connect to the internet at all, either by 3G or wi-fi.

  • you can turn airplane mode on and leave the wifi on so it will pick up a signal anywhere there's wifi for no charge.

This is what DH and I do on our trips.  We have a regular digital camera too but hardly ever used it during our last trip.  And don't get too paranoid about using your iPhone in public to take pictures - just use the same common sense you would use in any city and you'll be fine.

This is not true.  When I was in the Dominican Republic last week, I left my phone in airplane mode and used wi-fi at the same time.

If you want to be extra careful, you also can turn off all cellular data and roaming.  I think these options are found under either the general or settings menu.

  • We just got back from Germany with our iphone 4S from Verizon and just in case you are interested in the info: Verizon has a global data plan were you can get 100mb for $20.  We went ahead and got this just in case we wanted to use the internet and weren't around Wifi.  We jsut turned off all the data and voice roaming until we needed it and it was perfect!  When we needed internet (A map, a train departure time, GPS, etc,) we just turned on the data roaming real quick, checked the internet, and turned data roaming right back off.  The 100 mb was more than enough.  Just an idea for you!
