NC Outer Banks

We're just starting to research renting a beach house in the Outer Banks of NC.  It looks like there are a ton of towns to choose from.

Does anyone have one they'd recommend?

Thanks!

Re: NC Outer Banks

  • There really are not that many towns in the main part of the Outer Banks. But let's see if I can help:

Duck / Coralla area: these are the more Northern beaches. Little quieter than the main strip of Nags Head. Beaches are less crowded, restuarants are smaller. It's a cute little area. Plus not to far from everything in Nags Head.

Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hill and Nags Head - are all more on the main strip on the beach. Lot of places to stay, lots of resturants - and more crowded beaches.

Hatteras - and the islands surronding it - are way more remote (we are talking an hour from nags head). Not a ton to do in Hatteras - but the beaches and fishing are awesome!

Here is a website that might help:

  • yup! I agree with the other poster :-) My parents have a vacation house on Hatteras Island, so we're down in the OBX a lot.

the more northern towns (duck, nags head, kitty hawk) are move developed, and more to do (restauants, shopping, etc). it is probably a better area to stay in with kids because there is just more going on.

Hatteras island  (towns of Rodanthe, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco) is a national seashore, so a lot of it is preserved. its not as built up as the other towns. BUT, there is still stuff to do. my parents house is in Avon and at the end of their street is a spa/yoga studio, there is a nice food lion grocery store right there, mini golf, restaurants, wave runner and Hobie Cat sailboat rentals. there is also the Cape Hatteras lighthouse which is neat to see.  so its not like there is NOTHING to do on Hatteras island... its just more low key and slightly more "rustic" than the more northern beaches :-)

LEt me know if you have any questions!

  • I love Avon! Lots to do there; love kula and all the great restaurants, and most importantly - no outlet mall.

  • Thanks for the great advice everyone!

Right now I think I'm going to start looking in Duck/ Coralla area - I like the idea that they are a little quiete but still have stuff to do & aren't that far from the "busy" area if we decide we want to spend a day down there.

miss1180 I may try & get in contact with you once we do a little more planning.

    Thanks again!

We rent in Duck yearly.  My favorite neighborhood is the 4 Seasons.  We use either Twiddy or Carolina Designs for rental agent.

  • If you decide you want to stay in Rodanthe (the opposite area from Duck) I highly recommend staying at the Waves Village Resort. http://www.wavesvillage.com/

We stayed there last year and loved it. The views out to the sound are amazing. Plus, the price wasn't too high and the units are three bedroom/three bath. My family and my in-laws went and had a blast.
