PG weight gain vent

girls, i am so frustrated with my weight gain compared to how much i am supposed to gain according to my obgyn.  i have gained almost 30 pounds and i still have 12 weeks to go. my doc said to gain between 25-35 total.  i have no idea how that will be possible at this point now that the baby is gaining so much more weekly.

the thing that kills me is that i have only really gained in my uterus and i am actually really happy with how i look!  everyone tells me how small i am and that you can't tell that i'm pregnant from behind.  i exercise regularly and i eat really well - i'm pretty conscious of what i put into my body in terms of calories.  i make a concerted effort to get the best bang for my buck when it comes to eating, so that what i eat fills me up and also provides appropriate nutrients, etc.

my 6-yr-old niece told me (while rubbing my belly) that she wished that you could stay skinny when you are having a baby, haha...but now i'm starting to agree.

can anyone commiserate?  i will seriously start crying immediately if my doctor addresses my weight gain at my appt this week.

/vent over!

  • As long as you are healthy and the baby is healthy, I wouldn't worry about "the number".

  • Sometimes bodies just gain more. If your Doctor isn't a jerk they will be more worried that you aren't making the right food choices and moving regularly not that he number is too much. Don't worry it is a just guideline. Also the baby isn't gaining to much at the end. Just a pound or so those last weeks. No worries.
  • I have no advice, just sympathies. I gained about 40 pounds with dd and I have no idea how! I ate healthy the whole time (except for a couple days of halloween candy binging around 36 ish weeks) and exercised up until about 2 weeks before delivery when I was just too tired after work to do anything but make dinner--and I mean like kickboxing and step aerobics class exercising. I have no idea how I got to 40 pounds but I looked pretty good ( I thought!) and felt good and it all came off through breastfeeding within about 2 months (maybe less?) post partum. My drs never said anything but Im sure if they had I would have been nervous and worried and feeling panicked because I thought I was doing everything "right".

As pp said, try to keep up your current focus on a healthy lifestyle, not the numbers. Some people gain 10 pounds and some gain 60 pounds. Most of them are all healthy and "normal". If your dr gives you a hard time, ask them for advice--either they will have good tips, realize that youre doing everything right and leave you alone about it, or YOU will realize that they are idiots. Either way, win-win! ;)

  • I was overweight when I got pregnant and my doc told me I shouldn't have gained any weight at all.  I gained 35lbs.  It all came off relatively quickly.  I'm still overweight, but that's just from laziness.

  • Thanks, ladies.  DH has been saying the same things to me, but it's nicer to hear it from people who have been there!  It also doesn't help that he has decided to become a calorie counter and regular exerciser now that I'm pregnant - kind of annoying!!

  • you're definitely fine!  i was up 35lbs and gave birth 5 weeks early and my doc didn't have anything to say about it.  i lost it all by the time i went back from maternity leave (clothes didn't necessarily fit exactly right but the weight was gone).

be mindful about the junk but its okay to indulge once in a while.  i NEEDED oreos and milk after dinner every night for 2 months.  so i had them.  eat balanced meals and stay active.  you got this!

oh, and my dh has never been happier than when i topped out over him on weight.  jerk.

i am going to be guessing if every pregnant woman on the beach is you this summer......

well, i'm pretty sure you know which end of the beach i'll be at - look for the chick trying to ignore 12 rambunctious, noisy kids!

  • I think if you're already eating as healthy as you can and getting some exercise there's not much else you can do. I love my kid but i hated just about every ounce I gained and couldn't wait to get it off.  The real kick in the asss for me was that I was more hungry AFTER I gave birth bc I was nursing.

IMO, the issue is when women use pregnancy as an excuse to eat like crap at the so called pregnancy smorgasbord bc they're "eating for two".

Keep up the good work and make sure you're getting lots of water. It will help with th fluid retention in the later weeks. The good news is you're in the home stretch!
