Costa Rica Rainy Season

Has anyone ever gone during the rainy season?

We are just about to book a trip and in my research I found out September is height of their rainy season ....great.

I don't care if it rains here or there, a downpour for an hour and then it's beautiful and sunny, but does rainy season there pretty much guarantee a monsoon for days at a time?!

Ugh, damn unpredictable weather!

Re: Costa Rica Rainy Season

  • Not sure about September, but we were there in June/July and that's still considered green season.  We actually thought it was great -  it rained early in the morning and late in the evening, so the temps stayed a little more bearable.  Everything was green and prices were lower.  It was a great compromise -  you want rain in the rainforest, so embrace it!
  • Yes! Thank you! I just found a weather report for September last year and it DID rain almost every day, but like you said, just for an hour here and there, which I can TOTALLY deal. I was nervous about a torrential down pour/monsoon-like conditions, but I looked at every day last September and none of the days were that bad. Phew.

  • Well, that's the fun part!  When it did rain, it rained HARD.  It just became part of the experience.  Where are you planning to go?
  • We just booked our flight to LIR and are staying in Papayago.

  • There really isnt any way to avoid the rain. It just becomes part of the day. I remember one of our guides saying if it rains in the morning it will be nice in the evening and vice versa. That definitely held true for our trip. Have a fun time!

  • Thanks, now we have to decide on tours. There are SO many to choose from!

  • Try to hike Arenal volcano if you can. I'm not a very outdoorsy person and that was still one of the coolest experiences I've had.

Yes, we were just looking at excursions to Arenal... there's so much to do there!

  • My husband and I went last month which was the start of rainy season.  It rained for about an hour or 2 each night but that was it.  We spent several nights in Manuel Antonio and then stayed a night near Poas Volcano.  It was great!
