Where to stay around DC or Baltimore?

We're taking a roadtrip in a couple weeks from Florida to NJ. Passing through DC we want to take a day to sightsee. We've never been up that way. We're not used to big cities and want to know any areas we should definitely avoid. And any recomendations  for a hotel to stay the night at either in DC or Baltimore or in between. We have a 1 year old and safety and not getting in the wrong parts of town are our number 1 priority. The more I think about it the more paranoid other lol. First roadtrip as a family, kinda nervous. Thanks for any advice!

Re: Where to stay around DC or Baltimore?

  • We've always like the Hyatt in Arlington...very close to the metro and I've always felt safe in the area.  Parking is also a bit more reasonable than some of the hotels that are in the district.

  • Every city has unsafe/seedy areas. For the most part, DC and its suburbs are all perfectly fine. For one day, I would probably avoid staying in DC proper and would stick to a close by suburb (Arlington, Alexandria, Silver Spring are all good options and parking at a hotel will be cheaper than in DC proper). You can take the Metro into the city and take advantage of a lot of the free stuff the city has to offer.
  • We liked the Inner Harbor Marriott in Baltimore and got a great price doing a Priceline bid.

  • If you decide to stay here in Baltimore, there is a great hotel in Fells Point called Henderson's Wharf.  The area has a lot of places to eat and little shops, and the hotel is gorgeous and right on the water.

    Enjoy your trip!

  • We just got back from Dc and stayed in Alexandria. It was about a 20 min metro ride into DC. We stayed at the Lorien Hotel and Spa on King Street. Never felt unsafe, even with walking our dog later at night. Streets were all very well lit and people were very friendly. The hotel also had 2 sister properties: Morrison House and Monaco and both looked nice, little far from the metro for what we wanted though.
  • I've stayed at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington a couple of times.  It's a nice hotel and the metro is connected to the hotel by and underground walkway.

  • I recommend looking for a hotel in the Crystal City area of Arlington.  It's a very safe area and close to I-395, which you can take through DC to Baltimore.  It's also Metro accessible, which makes it easy to get into DC.
