DH & I are taking a trip to Alaska Aug 10-19. We will be in Denali NP for 2 full days and we are trying to make all our reservations now. Once we land in Anchorage we'll drive out to the park entrance and stay a night in a hotel there. We plan to camp one night at either Savage River because we want a campground with running water. We are debating camping the other night at Wonder Lake. I hear the views there are absolutely amazing, but you have to contend with tons of biting flys. We are bringing bug nets for our heads and longer clothing, but still are apprehensive. Any have experience here that can offer advice? Is it worth it?
Also please recommend a company to use for a airplane flight over Denali that has permission to land on a glacier in DNP. TIA
Re: Denali National Park
DH and I just got back from Denali and we loved it! We were there preseason so we couldn't get all the way back to Wonder Lake sadly but I think it would be worth the effort to stay out there. The views we saw were amazing and we didn't even have the opportunity to go past 30 miles.
On a side note if you opted to stay somewhere "more civilized" we stayed at a great B&B about 15 minuets from the park entrance. Let me know if you want the info! Enjoy Alaska you will love it!
You could stay at the Savage River campground the whole time and take the shuttle bus out to Wonder Lake one of the days. Warning: It is a really long bus ride (5 or more hours one way on a gravel road in a school bus). I have been to Denali lots and lots of times in my life, but have never made it all the way out there.
