I worked in a daycare for 5 years. I loved the people I worked with, I loved the kids, the hours, the environment, basically everything except the corporate drama. I was attending school to get my degree in childhood education, but never completed this because I left the company.
15 months ago I left the daycare to help my parents out with their business. I am now a purchasing agent for a machine shop. 90% of the people here speak Spanish and very little English. I don't understand much of what is said, but I am quick at figuring it out.
I found out the hard way that my parents are the WORSE people to work for. I am degraded, humiliated, belittle, and talked down to on a daily basis. I left the company once before because I was sick of their drama and sh*t. My dad begged me to come back, and even offered me $2 an hour more. So I came back.
I'm at the point where I'm sick of it. I spend some lunch breaks crying in my car because of the way I am treated. I have constant headaches, I started biting my nails do to the stress, and I have found that I binge eat while at work. I have put on around 40 pounds in the past 15 months due to this stress.
I have no idea what to do anymore.
Re: What to do? Work related.
Find another job. Look into finding another daycare situation that better suits your personality, and hopefully one that will help you finish your degree. Or see if you can get a nanny position, or PT in-home daycare, or a million other things you're qualified for.
Not sure what the language situation has to do with anything.

Family businesses are notoriously difficult to work for.
Find another job. Do not tell them you're looking and when you get the job, leave. When a job starts to interfere with your health, it's time to go.
Ditto Tarpon.
I work for family, and had a terrible experience in the beginning. My father and I almost broke off contact over the way I was being treated. After some serious heart-to-hearts and implementing some boundaries, we are working well together... it took us a long time to get here, and we had to put a lot of people between us, but it is better now.
I can relate to the stress. I used to cry all the time, I had anxiety attacks, couldn't sleep. It was terrible. If you cannot get through to your parents then you need to find something else. This is not something that will improve.
You need a new job, stat. It is not worth sacrificing your health to stay at this job. Your relationship with your parents is probably also suffering if you are being constantly mistreated.
Look at daycare centers in the area. You should also consider finishing your degree. Good luck!
First of all, I'm so sorry. Before I was recently promoted, I worked in a horrible environment, so I understand what you mean about being depressed and the weight gain. Boy... do I understand...
Get out. Fast. For $2 more an hour it's not worth it. Find another job. Day care jobs are actually not too tough to find, especially if you have experience! Your happiness is worth a $2/hour pay cut, don't you think?
