Christmas Travel

DH and I are in the beginning stages of planning a trip over Christmas/New year. We've never taken a trip in December. I thought I would ask if anyone here has vacationed during Christmas? Where did you go and would you go again? TIA

2 Corinthians 12:9 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

  • Personally I would stay away from any warm weather locations.   I lived in the islands and xmas/nye was a PITA.   Way too many people, rates are at it's highest, just generally it was crazy.  I never understood why people traveled during that time. Well I actually do understand because of school breaks, but I never understood whey the same people came year after year.  I guess they like the crowds?  I made a lot of money those 7-14 days, but my head would spin.

  • This year we went to Lisbon for New Years.  The weather was pretty good - 50s and some days low 60s with mostly sunshine during the day - good for sightseeing but obviously not a warm getaway.  There were no crowds, everything was open for the most part (a lot of the attractions are closed on New Years Day, but the Oceanarium and most restaurants were open).  NYE was cool - fireworks in the main square, lots of people drinking champagne and hanging out, but no overwhelming crowds.  The year before that, we were in Cairo on Christmas - nothing special going on as it is not a major holiday there, but the weather was mild and the crowds were bearable! A few years ago we did a Caribbean cruise over Christmas and it was terrible - very crowded (especially with families).  I like traveling over the holidays to take advantage of the days off, but like pp said I would not do prime beach destinations.  I think it's a great time to visit cities with indoor attractions in case the weather is poor.  I'd lean to cities with somewhat milder winters but not limited to warm weather destinations.

Airfare can be expensive, and I have seen some hotels with special holiday rates, but overall with research and shopping around we've gotten reasonable airfare and stay at hotels that don't raise rates over the holidays.

  • my birthday is NYE and we typically go away for the long weekend.  We were in NOLA this past year and had a great time.  The weather was really mild, the decorations were just so  pretty and we had a so much fun :)  Other places we've gone have been Vegas, Niagara Falls, Boston.

I am a total beach vacationer, but I agree with not going to the islands - we priced out those trips and they were coming in at least $1k per day with flights and food.

  • We went to Spain one year and South Africa another. For the South Africa trip, we saved $500 each by flying back at 11pm on new year's eve.
