Chicago trip planning! Need food recs..

We're headed to Chicago for a long weekend. So far we're going on a kayak tour, a neighborhood bike tour, and to the Old Town Art festival. We're staying in the River North neighborhood. I'm trying to find an old school, kitschy steakhouse/supper club for a dinner out. The kind of place you can sip martinis and eat a big steak without spending much more than $100 for two. We're not really foodies, and would love something old and authentic. Any recommendations? I'm open to any neighborhood so long as we can take a train or possibly cab.

  • I haven't to Chicago long enough to know somewhere awesome to eat. I read this blog though and they might have some recommendations that might appeal to you.

On the right side of the blog you can sort by neighborhood.

  • I really like the River North area and you're close to lots of shopping, restaurants, etc.

Hmm kitschy steakhouse I'm not sure about. At Chicago Chophouse, you can definitely sip a martini and order a WONDERFUL steak, but it's going to run you more than $100 since their cheapest steak is already $50. I would try searching on places like Trip Advisor, Urban Spoon, Yelp, etc. I know on Urban Spoon you can search by cuisine, so you'd search for steakhouses, and then there are lots of user reviews by travelers and locals alike.

  • I lived in Chicago for five years and never had a steak in a city steakhouse, mostly because it was so expensive! But check yelp for steakhouses and check out some menus. As pp mentioned, a steak at any of the city's classic places will be at least $30, but more like $40-$50, and that's a la carte, and a martini will be at least $10 so staying under $100 will be pretty hard. Mastro's is supposed to be good but it's pricey.

My favorite place for steak was actually an Argentine steakhouse called Tango Sur. For $30 you can order "el filet" which is actually two huge tender filets with mashed potatoes. And it's BYOB, so you can grab a bottle (or two) of Malbec from the wine shop across the street, order a few appetizers and desserts, and your total spend for the night will still be under $80.

Mon Ami Gabi is also great. They have a hangar steak in merlot butter for about $25 and it's a really cute French bistro atmosphere. Good drinks too.

Other restaurants I love: HB (also BYOB, New American), MK (New American), Bonsoiree (fusion, BYOB prix fix), Longman and Eagle (gastropub) and Davanti Enoteco (Italian).

  • You have essentially just described the following places:

    • Club Lucky in Bucktown (take the Blue Line to Damen)
    • Miller's Pub in the Loop
    • Lots of restaurants in Old Town like Twin Anchors and The Fireplace Inn

Now my caveat is that I don't like that kind of food or atmosphere but those places will deliver on both.

For a modern take on a steakhouse/supper club, I would recommend The Pump Room, Sable, Sepia, and (for drinks) Watershed.
