Commission Only Jobs

Anybody in a commission only position or have a spouse that works strictly on commission?  My DH is taking a position with a company that will be strictly commission and it scares me.  I know people do it and can be very successful but I guess I'm just looking for success stories right now to ease my fears about the situation. TIA

Re: Commission Only Jobs

  • No gonna lie...it's hard.  DH has always been commission and I recently became. It requires planning ahead.  Make sure you create a savings account for those months there might not be a check.  Create a budget to stay on track but be sure to include an entertainment or "fun" line item so you stay sane.  It will be fine.  Just adjust your spending.

Remember it might end up being much better than a salary.

My sister worked a commission based job for awhile. She did very well. The only issue she had was coworkers stealing her customers out from under her.
  • I worked at a commission based service job for 3 years. I got 50% of the pay that I brought into store but I also got to keep my base pay if my commission for the week did not exceed my base pay, it was around $8.00. Your DH should look into this at his new employment and see if its is an option. On average I'd commission about $16/hr but it was hard to get when business is slow, you had cancellations, or if you just feel plain crappy. Also when there is competition for clients from your coworkers, that can be annoying!
