ink stain on clothes

My husband was trying to help with laundry and didn't check pockets before washing.  There was a Sharpie pen in one of his pockets and now it is all over the clothes.  Anyone know any ways to get that stains outs?

Re: ink stain on clothes

  • Ink usually comes out with hairspray or alcohol (like isopropyl/rubbing alcohol).  Sharpie is a permanent marker and probably left a lot of ink behind.  You could try alcohol but I don't know if it will work...
  • Fingernail polish remover with acetone.  Put a white rag between the fabric and blot with another white rag.  I have used it before on small spots and it works great.  Test the colorfastness of the clothes first.
  • Clear hand sanitizer gel! Apply to stains and let sit for about an hour before washing again. Hand sanitizer is alcohol based, but will draw stains out better since it's in gel form.
  • From working in a drycleaner, I have actually learned alcohol & hairspray are not the best options to remove stains in garments; on certain fabrics they can actually damage (burn) clothing and make them hard or discolored. Your best bet, is to seek professional help. Trying to treat stains yourself can actually make them worse. Always read & follow care label instructions and if something happens in the wash - NEVER dry them. The heat from the dryer can set stains in making it much more difficult to remove in the future.
  • I read on pinterest that hand sainitzier works?? Not sure, but maybe worth a try!!
