Best vacuum - Riccar, Miele, Dyson, etc.?
H is done with cheap vacuums that last a year. We have 2 dogs, both shed like crazy and drive me nuts. We only have carpet in two bedrooms and we have tile in the rest of the house. We do all occassionally have allergies and we have a new baby as well. Any recs or suggestions would be appreciated. I never thought I'd be spending a lot on a vacuum but we've literally had ours less than a year and it's fried and will be more expensive to fix than it is to buy a new model of the same one so we figured we'd go for something that is built to last. Thanks!

Re: Best vacuum - Riccar, Miele, Dyson, etc.?
Dyson hands down!
We also have 2 dogs. We have hardwood floors with area rugs and ceramic tile in the kitchen and baths. It was honestly the best $500 I ever spent. Got it almost 5 years ago and she is still going strong. My parents have even gotten one because mine held up so well and was so strong. I have the DC17 Animal and they have the DC28 Animal
We have a Miele and it is hands down the best vacuum I've ever owned. In fact, it is one of my favorite things ever. lol
I have two kids under 3 yrs and a Springer Spaniel who sheds like it's her job...I have to have a good vacuum. These are truly awesome machines.
I normally post on the pets board, but thought my input might be relevant. We have hardwood floors throughout and 2 ultra shedding dogs, so I wanted something gentle on the floors but still good at picking up maximum hair. We bought the Dyson Animal canister (the purple one), and I've not been really impressed with it. It works no better than any other canister I might have purchased. The hair gets stuck really badly, so I have to stop every minute to clean the hair out. I vacuum about twice every week. It does continue to 'suck' everything, but I don't feel like it's as powerful as other canisters we've had in the past. It's just so so. I'd rather pay $120 every couple of years for a vacuum with some real oomph (really, I shouldn't have to pass over this piece of something 7 times before the vacuum finally picks it up) rather than $500 all at once for something that lasts but is lackluster. IDK... It's just not the 'big thing' I expected when I shelled out so much $$$. Maybe if my house were carpeted it would be more worthwhile.
Highly recommend my Riccar. It has a double HEPA filter which manages the dander and dust better than the Dysons do. It's not sexy looking, but it a real workhorse.
Mine is about 10. It has survived 3 himalayan cats and DS's Legos. My old Hoover Wind Tunnel was destroyed by Legos, but the two stage motor of the Riccar handles bits without choking.
