Morning girls. As most of you have probably seen through facebook, we picked the puppy up on Saturday morning. We had a great day with him and a rough first night (he did awesome on his second night, we only had to get with him 3 times). I had the sniffles a bit on Saturday with him, but thought it could also be pollen from playing outside so much.
Sunday was another great day with him, but I started to notice that my skin was itching whenever I held him. He really wanted to be a lap dog and loved snuggling in, but I could only stand the itching for about 20 minutes before I either had to crate him or have Dan take him. Yesterday afternoon when I was holding him in my lap I started to get a rash and small hives/bumps where he'd been laying. I called up the shelter because I was concerned about fleas, but they said that since Dan had no issue with it, it's more likely a skin allergy I'm having.
So we talked with the shelter and made the tough decision to bring him back this morning (it was technically a 5 day trial adoption, but we'd never imagined being in this position). I know that it's what is best for him and they actually already have a few other applications for homes so he'll find one soon, but I just feel terrible. As much as I'll miss him, Dan is even more devastated. I've only ever seen him cry twice before and he's been walking around with his sunglasses on since yesterday because he's been such a mess and doesn't want anyone to notice. I feel horrible.
Re: Puppy Update
That is pretty sad, and im sure it was tough. In sorry.
Have you reactions like that before to animals? What kind of a dog is he? I am allergic to animals but I've always insisted on having them. For me I've found that the longer I am around them the more my body adapts and doesn't over react to the animal. Once they learn not to lick it makes a huge difference. Most people are allergic to the saliva and (i know this is gross) their urine (more with cats) and then of course their dander. I always have to remember that after I pet them I have to wash my hands and not touch my eyes/face. It sounds like a lot of work but it's not really.
I have asthma as well as allergies so that was harder on me to get over. Again, it takes me a while to adapt to them. That being said, my husband has a cat (that lives with his parents, that I actually bought him about 10 years ago) and I have NEVER gotten used to him. He is a long haired cat and when we lived with them I was miserable. DH doesn't let us have animals now lol maybe someday.
Either way, I guess im just saying that I understand what your going through and I'm sorry, it's really a pain and it's hard to fall in love with a pet and not be able to keep it

That's so sad! I'm sorry you two weren't able to keep him, but having such a strong allergic reaction like that is definitely not something to mess around with.
Hugs to you and Dan. I don't know what is is about guys and dogs, but they get attached to each other so quickly. I hope you both start feeling better about everything. You couldn't have known it would turn out this way.
