If you live in western OKC area...

I know a lot of our nesties live out west (Mustang/Yukon areas).  What drew you to living in this area?  I haven't spent a lot of time out that way so I have no idea what is around the area.  DH and I are talking about moving and have found a neighborhood we really like in OKC but are also exploring Mustang/Yukon.  Tell me why you love it.

Re: If you live in western OKC area...

  • I know I've only been here for like, a week, but I really love living out here.  We chose it primarily for convenience -- H actually works all over the western portion of the state and sometimes in NW Texas.  But it really is a nice area, the homes are beautiful, the people are all nice (which I know is not specific to this area).  It's also close enough to OKC without being right in the middle of it.  Coming from Dallas, it was a nice change of pace to get something that's a little more "out of the way."
  • You remember where we live, right? We're just a few miles east of Mustang, and I love it... though personally I wouldn't mind being a few miles further west! But I really like that it's not a busy area, we still have some open fields in the area, but at the same time we're close to everything we need.

  • Mostly, we moved here because it's closer to H's work. Also, we wanted to build and land is cheaper here than in Edmond (which we were also considering...well, mainly me not H).

    Pros:

    low traffic

    slower pace

close to several highways (at least where we live)

get more house for your money

Yukon has a lot of good shopping options for being way out here

more sense of community than OKC was for us

it's a growing area, which is good for our property value

    Cons:

not a lot of quality restaurant/grocery options (fast food options are taco bell & McDonald's and I was used to Chipotle and Cool Greens... on the bright side I have saved a lot of money by rarely eating fast food!)

I feel like I'm driving ALL THE TIME because it's so far out here (compared to where we used to live)

The good out weighs the bad, although I do love living in the city... I like it out here too.

This makes me especially sad.  Where is the closest Whole Foods/Central Market/Something with a fresh meat department?

There is a meat market in Mustang that sells frozen grass fed ground beef. "The Health Food Center" (http://shop.thehealthfoodcenter.net/) is off I-240 and Penn. They have hormone & antibiotic free chicken, grass fed beef (steaks and stuff too) and pastured pork. All frozen, not fresh. There is a Whole Foods in OKC. I also buy grass fed beef from Sunflower market (off N. May and NW 63rd st in OKC) when it's on sale for $3.99/lb. I don't love the way it tastes, but when it's that cheap I can't resist. There is also another health food store called Akins near Sunflower market.

    Hope that helps!

  • We like the sense of community that we have.  There are several nice neighborhoods in the area and there really isn't a bad part of town.  I enjoy our community center.  Restaurants here do suck...that's a definite negative.  I love that we are close to anywhere we need to go, though.  I can get to the turnpike in 6-7 minutes, I-40 in 7-8, 240 and 44 in about 15.  Our eating out has decreased a little...but not much. :)

  • I love the location. I feel close to everything without having to be in OKC. I love that there are still a lot of open fields. It reminds me of home. There are a lot of nice neighborhoods here as well. I was hoping to feel a sense of community here, but we have yet to meet any new friends. I think the restaurant choices are endless, but I come from a town where Sonic was the only choice for 20 miles a majority of my life. Like someone else said, the main factor for us moving here was that there really isn't a bad part of town. I like feeling safe.

  • I'm new to the board, but I've lived in Yukon for almost 3 1/2 years.  I moved here because this is where DH grew up.  He owned his house and I was renting at the time.  I'm from Kansas and Oklahoma really isn't that different.

I love Yukon because it is so close to everything but not right next to it.  I know a lot of people have said the same thing.  I grew up out in the middle of no-where and had to drive 20 miles just for a grocery store.  So having to drive 20 minutes to get downtown is not a problem for me.  Compared to where I'm from Yukon has a lot of great shopping.  But as I'm adjusting to having all the convenience, I'm also loving that the malls aren't too far nor is downtown. That new outlet mall is just down I-40.

I like that Yukon still has a smaller town feel versus a city feel.  The people are very friendly.  I've recently been trying to talk DH into moving to Edmond since I work at UCO, but he says no.  For some reason his family has this thing about people from Edmond being stuck up.  Everyone I've met in Edmond is super nice, so I don't get it.  But I'm happy in Yukon and the turnpike makes for an easy drive to work. (except for that dratted construction).   We don't have kids yet, but I hear the schools in Yukon are great.

  • I would choose Yukon over Mustang but just because that is where I was raised.  We are currently debating between two neighborhoods and the only major difference in Yukon vs Mustang schools.  I like the area because it is a lot quieter out here but DH can still get to the capitol complex in less than 30 mins and we can get to north OKC, east OKC, or south OKC within 30 mins too.  DH is from Del City and although I am the reason we bought this house he does not hesitate to tell people that we are happy here and plan to stay out here.  I will say that where we currently live we have OKC utilities and I really like that!  I want more info about where you guys are looking!  :)

We actually discussed your neighborhood.  Are you guys close enough to Mustang that you shop there or do you utilize OKC more?

The land being cheaper and more house for your money is probably our biggest draw to the area.

Where we are now we can pretty much get to anywhere we need to go (except work for me) in less than 10 minutes.  I think I've been spoiled by that.

Eating out less is always a plus!  Except then I have to cook.....

We will still want to technically be within city limits.  I'll fb you with where we are looking.

  • I don't live there now, but when S and I decicded to buy land to build in Mustang, we chose it because it was a pretty close run for him to get to work and because we could get more house for our money out there than if we stayed in Moore.  We also wanted a bigger lot and that was easier to find in Mustang than in Moore/OKC.

It is still close enough to get to the things we wanted to/liked to do in OKC/Moore/Norman, but far enough out that we didn't feel like we would feel like we were living in the city.

I go to Mustang on occasion, but I tend to utilize OKC/Moore more often than not--mainly because Moore has Target. ;) But Moore is growing quite a bit, and I like that there are (finally) a lot more restaurant options there, including some local ones.
