help with my cat... PLEASE!

Awhile ago I wrote that I was having some problems with my cat and your suggestions helped so I figured I would try again.

Last night DH and I finally got the babies down and were getting into bed and DH yells that the cat pooped in the bed!  There were like 10 or so pieces of poop in our bed.  She has never done anything like this before.  Her litter box is clean, she had food and water, I don't know why she would have done this....   With the babies home she doesn't come out as much, but she never was much of a social cat.  She still gets attention and the only time we have moved her was when she went in one of their cribs.  Has any one had this happen, and why would she do something like that?

**UPDATE:  we just went upstairs and she peed all over all comforter and two of my shirts that were on the bed.... DH is pissed!  He will make me give her up if this continues.... HELP!

Re: help with my cat... PLEASE!

  • It sounds like since it's bowel and bladder involved, it's more than likely a behavior problem.  I'd make an appt with the vet just to rule out any medical issues though first.  Did it start after you brought the babies home?  Unfortunately it's probably jealousy.  If it's behavorial, can you keep her confined to one room with her food, water, toys, and litter boxes for awhile?  Also you can try that Feliway (it's like a Glade plug-in for cats).  It emits phermones that are supposed to relax the cat.  It didn't really work for our problem cat.  But it's worth a shot.  Good luck!!!!  :(  That has to be frustrating!

  • I would post this on the Pets board. They always have good suggestions for these situations.  With that said, the first thing they will tell you to do is to take her to the vet.  Drastic changes in behaviour like that are often caused by a medical issue.  If it's not medical, have you switched the brand of litter you used recently?  Cats can be weird about that.  If there's nothing medically wrong and no other explanation, I would try to re-litter by confining her to a room for awhile like pp suggested.  Good luck!!

  • Ugh, I'm so sorry that you are having issues with your cat. I totally understand as our cat peed all.over.everything when we moved into our new house. I think changes, such as moving or new babies, can cause cats to freak out.

We took her to the vet and they did a urine analysis to rule out a possible UTI or other medical issue. Thats definitely your first step. Once that was ruled out, they said that they could give us 'prozac for cats' to give her. We decided not to do that, but to this day, I still worry when we have company that she will pee on things.

Good luck and let us know how things work out for you!

  • Well, you've all been through a lot of changes lately and that can cause behavior changes.

Go to the vet.  Keep your bedroom door closed so that she can't get in there.  Try a second litter box, just to rule out any chance that she's being finicky. You may want to try some anti anxiety meds if simpler changes don't work. They aren't too expensive and will help a great deal in a situation like this.

Your husband needs to calm down a bit. He's gonna have lots of other things peeing and pooping all over the place. Relax and close the bedroom door!

  • I would also guess it is a behavior problem, although I agree that a trip to the vet is warrented to rule out any issues. The fact that the cat is targeting your bed, clothing, etc. is probably intentional because of changes that have happened. If the cat was also peeing on the sofa, carpet, etc. I might be more worried that it was a medical issue.

PP's gave some good advice, I hope you are able to find something that works. The cat care center on Purina has forums where you can post questions or look through posts by doing a search.
