Recs for Argentina and Brazil!

Hello lovely Travel Nesties. I posted a few weeks ago asking for recommendations and my post seems to have completely disappeared.

Anywho, the hubs and I will be spending about 10 days in Argentina this August. So far we know we want to do Buenos Aires, Mendoza and possibly a day trip to Monte Video, Uruguay via the ferry. We are renting a car and our itinerary is pretty flexible. We have booked our flights and have some good leads regarding lodging but would love your suggestions for: lodging, restaurants, must-sees, must-dos. You savvy ladies always have amazing suggestions.

As for Brazil, we will be there only 7days, we are attending a special convention in Rio. This would be my second time there but first time for the hubs.  We are considering perhaps a day trip to Buzios or neighboring area.

Have any of you traveled to Brazil during their winter months? We will be there latter part of August and are wondering about the temperatures, and if we can expect any warm weather/sun during our stay.

TIA!

Re: Recs for Argentina and Brazil!

  • Not sure about the temps. I just got back from Rio. somewhere in here is a wonderful thread w/ great rec about restaurants in Rio from my post, I think about 3-4 pages in...

I did two nights in Foz de Iguacu (near argentina border) based on several recommendations and it did not disappoint! Lots of active things to do. We stayed at the Hotel das Cataratas inside the parque on the brazil side. AMAZING! Great service, absolutely stunning hotel and 5 star food but pricier than other places. Worth every penny! (it's part of the Orient Express hotel group) They have a spa, shopping, gorgeous pool area. Good for relaxing after a day in the rainforest! and access to the waterfall after the parque closes so you can miss the crowds.

One of my favorite meals was at the Escola de Visual Arts, Parque Lage near the Jardim Botanico. It is off the beaten path and mostly locals/hipsters in a beautiful setting. They offer a great Cafe des manha for dirt cheap.

  • There has been a mass exodus from The Nest to a new board, due to a format change. The nest went to a new format (like the local boards did a few months ago), it didn't work properly, people got super pissed and a new board was created. The nest changed back to the original format and lost any new posts (that's where yours went to).

If you google "GBCN pro boards" you'll find a link to it. It's set up just like these boards. You'll probably get more responses over there.

In Mendoza we stayed in a small 7 room in on a vineyard which I can't recall the name of it but it was fantasic.  They also arranged for a car and driver for us for a day to do wine tasting.

Definitely consider a trip to Iguazu falls.  That and Mendoza were the best part of the trip.  Uruguay was only ok for me (we went to Punta del Este).

  • oh, and a Brasiliera, who is a good friend of my sister , took us to eat at a charming restaurant in Impanema named Paz & Amor. no view but good food! She lives in Impanema so I trust it was a safe recommendation. also full of locals.

  • Montevideo isn't really day trip distance from BsAs. Many people go to Colonia for the day on the fast Buquebus which takes an hour each way, but to Montevideo it's 3 hours which means you'd be spending most of the day on the boat. Not really worth it in my opinion, although I did like spending a long weekend in Montevideo (http://www.emilyinchile.com/tag/montevideo/ - sorry, Chrome requires ugly links).

Here's what I did on my last BsAs trip: http://www.emilyinchile.com/tag/buenos-aires/. The walking tour we did was especially good for an intro to the city. For food, check out a puertas cerradas (private restaurant) like Casa Mun, Cocina Sunae or Colectivo Felix (going to the latter next month). Very popular dining experience there right now. Also Cabrera and Cabrera Norte get good reviews for steak, and Caf? San Juan in San Telmo is awesome. http://thetravelchica.com/ has a series on good eats right now which you should check out. I stayed at Hotel Moreno last time - amazing deal if you book in advance - and am staying at Fierro Hotel this time to switch up neighborhoods.

Where are you renting the car? I wouldn't have one in BsAs, public transportation is good and traffic is a headache, but maybe you mean for Mendoza?

Rio is great (last trip here, definitely go eat dessert at Confeitaria Colombo! http://www.emilyinchile.com/tag/rio-de-janeiro/). Again I wouldn't necessarily do Buzios as a day trip because it's a good 2 hours - make it an overnight if you can. I was there in June last year, aka mid-winter, and it was still beach weather as you can see from the photos. Do bring a sweater, but expect heat as well.

Have a great trip, sorry this is 10 pages long!

  • We did our trip to Buenos Aires and Mendoza in August and I thought the weather was perfect - 60's-low 70's in Mendoz and low 60's in BA.

In Mendoza, we stayed at B&B Plaza Italia and arranged a wine tour with the owners son, who was fantastic. We loved Azafran and El Palenque for dinner.

  • thank  you so much for the excellent suggestions! we plan on renting a car after a few days in BsAs, as we know they have a great transportation system..
  • thank you! im disappointed so many travel nesties have left the Nest:( I will do a search on that board as well!
