Puerto Rico - November

DH and I have chartered a sailboat to tour the BVI. Enroute to the marina, we will have two nights in Puerto Rico. So not interested in beaches or water adventure in PR. What do you recommend for must see, do, eat/drink and places to stay. We love nature, culture, history but not places that are too crowded. DH is a bit of a foodie.

  • I was just there for the first time in May. I was in San Juan. The historic Spanish fort was pretty neat to explore. The El Yunque rain forest was also beautiful.

As for food. Dh and I didn't really find anything that blew us away near San Juan. The best thing we had was some crazy roasted pork from a road side stand. A lot of the food we saw were American chains. It seems subway and burger king are really popular. The Subway was always bustling.

Mofongo is a plantain dish that is from the island, but honestly the local Cafe Berlin we went to wasn't worth our time. (It was recommended on Trip Advisor.)

We enjoyed the island, the people were friendly we just didn't luck out on some amazing food as we have on other vacations.

  • The best calamari I EVER ate was in Puerto Rico!  I can't remember the restaurant.... it was on the west coast, up on top of a hill.... It was a local place, not a chain name.
  • You should check out El Morro.
  • To visit, El Morro (spanish fort), El Yunque (rainforest) Tibes (Historic Indian Settlement) Mofongo is amazing the best is in El don quixote I think in Ponce. Must have mallorcas, there is a good place in old san juan.
  • Go to Old San Juan for sure. The forts are amazing and look out over the Carribean. The food is delicious, the best food I've ever eaten was in PR! La PErla restaurant located in the La Concha hotel was a big favorite, although pricey. We also loved Aqua Viva in OSJ. Also, Pizza e Birra in OSJ is one of my favorite places on earth bc of atmosphere, food, etc. Try to get a table outside. The El Yunque is supposed to be very cool, although a little far from SJ. The cathedral in OSJ is beautiful if you're interested in that sort of thing. You can enjoy yourself just walking around. The Puerto Ricans are so friendly.
