ering or other peeps that know DC

I am tagging along with DH on a trip to DC.  We will be staying in Alexandria and I will be on my own for two days while he does his work stuff.  I've been to DC several times and have done most of the museums and whatnot, so I'm looking for something that perhaps I've missed...or off the beaten path.  Are there places for me to explore within Alexandria as well?  Keep in mind that I'm currently just about 29 weeks PG but I'm totally fine with walking around, assuming it's not a million degrees out.

Also, suggestions for places for dinner?  Maybe 1-2 casual places and 1 nicer place?  We are big on seafood.

Thanks!

  • It's been some time since I've been down there, but I have found Old Town Alexandria to be absolutely adorable, even just to walk around.
  • As far as restaurants go, there's a place that's TO DIE FOR just down the street from the White House, if you guys end up in that area.  It's called the Founding Farmers.  So. Freaking. Good.
  • Alexandria is great!  Super fun.  Are you staying in Old Town or elsewhere in Alexandria?  Is the hotel near metro?

If you are near metro- I require you to come into town so I can take your preggo butt out to lunch.

Dinners: Founding Farmers is good, Potenza is good for Italian, Evening Star Cafe (in Alexandria) is great.

There is a slightly cheesey but great seafood spot in Old Town called the Wharf.  Think old school seafood where your options for sides are coleslaw, baked/mashed or fries.  But its GOOD.

Old Ebbitt is known for oysters.

    Birch and Barley

Cieba- Latin flare and great seafood.

Activities: you can wander Old Town and Del Ray.  They are both super cute.  There are great maternity shops in Old Town and some super cute kid shops in Del Ray.

You can hop a water taxi over to National Harbor (sadly I am not sure what is over there other than bars/restaurants).

You can come into DC.  I like the Holocaust Museum a lot.  The Portrait Gallery is awesome.  There are usually cheap tickets for the Newseum available online and it is a great spot.  I really like it there and they have a cool presidential campaigns exhibit running.  Are you more artsy or more history?  I can get you a staff guided capitol tour if dh is having a slow day.....

Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the saints...this place is fan-friggin-awesome.  Menu is amazing and the dessert sampler is to die for. I know you won't be imbibing of their beverages, but their selection is top-notch. It's almost worth driving down just for a meal (the mister and I have joked about doing this on more than one occasion).

1- If you do, call me.  We are very, very close.

2- Evening Star is the same management group and is more of a wine place (wine store is attached).  It has more of a vintage vibe to the B&B streamlined modern but the food at each is phenomenal.  DS ate an entire portion of the spring pea risotto at Evening Star (it helped that ham and parmesan were also ingredients).

  • yay - thank you for all the recs!

erin - this is the description for the hotel:  "Located in the West End of Historic Alexandria, Virginia, the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center is 5 miles from the tours, events, attractions, monuments, and business district of Washington D.C."

i don't know what this means in terms of our location, haha.  I have to believe there is a metro nearby - if so, I would love to meet up for lunch!  i will email you.
