Can we talk about kitchens?

Our next house project will be to give our builder-grade townhouse kitchen a face lift. We're going to replace the cabinets, floors, counters, and paint. We don't plan to stay here more than a couple more years, so we're not going all out, but it does need a little upgrade.

DH likes a style like this, and I like that a lot too, but the thing is that we are going to keep our white appliances and it just doesn't look the same with white.

Anyone have white appliances and love their kitchen?? Looking for ideas :)

Re: Can we talk about kitchens?

  • why aren't you including appliances in your reno?

  • Because the appliances we have are relatively new and replacing them all would make the project too expensive I think.

  • I don't think the ones your DH picked out go with white appliances at all. I would say if you're definitely keeping white appliances, I would go with white cabinets or a really light colored wood.
  • We're slowly redoing our kitchen (everything original to 93), and have been replacing our appliances. However, because ours were so old, it might be a bit different -- we're also saving on electricity because we're upgrading. I also just really prefer black and/or stainless steel and I think most buyers in the next couple years still will, too.

I like the link you posted a lot, but don't think it would look as nice with white appliances. If you're set on keeping the appliances, I would look for a more fresh and airy look with white cabinets and lighter, brighter colors on the wall.

Ditto, I think if you did white appliances with the dark wood cabinets, it could actually make it look dated or unfinished.  If I had to keep white appliances, I would personally go with white cabinets, light countertop/flooring, and a light to medium color on the walls, like yellow or green or periwinkle, something like that.

  • ditto everyone else on getting lighter cabinets to go w/ the white appliances.  But, I would really, really seeif you can get SS appliances as that's going to give you the most bang for your buck on resale.

You should be able to get new entry level SS appliances for a good price.

  • My parents have white appliances and dark cabinets.  Not AS dark as in the picture you have but definitely not a light wood.  I think the countertop that my mom picked out really brings it all together.  It's Corian and it has a lot of the red/cherry/brown from the cabinets and floors, but it's as the specks and not the base of the counter. (I hope that made sense).  With the lighter counter, the whole room isn't as heavy and the white appliances don't stick out or look out of place.

If you are at your parent's soon and want to swing by, I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem.

  • Hmm, I didn't consider that white appliances would cause such an issue! I like white cabinets, but not sure if DH would be on board for that. I foresee many disagreements with this project...

  • I agree with Kathryn, your typical buyer is still hung up on SS appliances (I don't neccessarily agree, I think the whole SS/grantie obsession is ridic.).  Good news is that SS appliances come in a wide range of price's now because they are so popular.  So if you were to go with dark cabinets then you could either include this in your budget, or budget it for down the road, maybe a year or two after you replace the countertops and cabinets.  I love the white cabinet with a darker counter top look personally and I think you can stick with your white appliances or put in SS now or down the road.  It also depends on your space, I think dark cabinets in smaller/closed in kitchen can really make the kitchen look even smaller, but white really helps expand the room, and then using darker countertops can really anchor the room without using too much dark.

  • also - BTW - they make S/S that isn't really stainless - its just painted to look like it.  I used these when I replaced the appliances in my old house before I sold it.

  • I just saw a post on The Inspired Room about white appliances.  They had a few more images.  Here's the link if you're interested: http://theinspiredroom.net/2012/06/12/white-appliances/
  • We have white cabinets and replaced our white appliances with stainless steel a few years ago.  I'll have to see if I have a picture of how it used to look.  Personally, in my next house I don't want stainless steel but I think that with white cabinets SS looked the best.

  • I love to look on houzz for pictures.  If this link doesn't work, just search for "white appliances" and there are a lot of pictures of kitchens.  Most do revolve around white cabinets, however.  http://www.houzz.com/white-appliances

  • I have almost that exact kitchen (cherry cabinets, lightish brown flecked quartz counters, and all white appliances. It looks just fine to me! I'm in the minority that prefers white to stainless though.

Yes  I was looking at my kitchen again last night and I was thinking maybe it would be okay with white. I'm still torn though! But good to know that it can work!

Haha after reading/responding to this thread, I thought about it when I walked into my kitchen when I got home last night. I really do like the white with the kitchen design/colors. I wish I had a picture for you. We have some really light yellow flecks in our counters that sort of tie in with the white appliances, and we have white accents, like a white crock that holds spatulas, a white paper towel holder, etc. It can definitely work!
