We (me, DH & our 16 mo old) will be spending a few days in the Salzburg area in a few weeks. We're trying to narrow down our itinerary since we have limited time there & still want to be flexible w/ the baby.
Any recs on things to do in Salzburg w/ the toddler? Is the castle worth the tour? What about the Sound of Music tour w/ DS? We will have a car so we'll be able to tour the scenic area, so I'm not sure this is worth it. We do enjoy tours though - so any recs on one that would also be suitable for DS?
Also any input on Halstatt? We're driving from Munich & thinking about stopping in the Berchtesgaden area first on the way to Salzburg, but we're not sure if we can do both Berchtesgaden and Halstatt - so if anyone's been to both & can give any input on which is better? thanks!
Re: Salzburg area w/ toddler
We did salzburg with our son a few years ago.
The only thing that comes to mind that is super kid friendly is hellbruin. There was a huge park there for him to play on.
My husband and son didn't go on the sound of music tour with me but there were plenty of kids on the bus. I would suggest wearing her in an ergo instead of a stroller because while in the city there is a lot of on and off the bus movement so it would be a pain getting the stroller out every few minutes.
We went out to the lake district on that tour and stayed in a little town for an hour or so to see the church where they were married and eat. That would be nice for her o run around!
Salzburg is cute! Good luck.
Oh and our trip was:
Amsterdam to Munich
Munich to eagles nest
Eagles nest to salzburg
Salzburg to the tirol area where we stayed in a kinderhotel
Kinder hotel to fussen
Fussen to munich
Munich to amsterdam
We did quite a few holidays in europe with our toddler and that trip was by far our very very favorite. If you have questions about any of the other places let me know!
Obsession - thanks for the tips! I think you responded to some of my posts a few months ago also
I think we will skip the Sound of Music tour.. Did you tour the castle in Salzburg? is it worth it? Since we have such limited time I don't want to waste it. (I've been in many castles already & we'll be visiting one in Poland too...)
Can you give any input on Munich? We will have less than a day there - we arrive at 2pm & want to go eat at a good beer hall. I'm thinking probably the Hofbrahaus... Here's our itinerary so far (could changing depending on DS):
day 1 - arrive Munich; eat at beer hall
day 2 - drive to Salzburg; spend day touring the town
day 3 - drive to Halstatt & surrounding lake area
day 4 - possibly drive to Berchtesgaden on way back to Munich - or head straight to Munich to explore the city more
day 5 - fly home

We didn't go to the Hofbrahaus. We went to the Hirschgarden just because it was right by the hotel we stayed at but it was fantastic. http://www.hirschgarten.com/
It was huge and outdoors and there were playgrounds and green grass and kids everywhere.
Munich wasn't a city that really excited me. It was cute but just from pictures Berchtesgaden looks prettier (although I never went to Berchtesgaden).
In Munich, we did:
nymphenburg palace - it was beautiful and had a ton of gardens to wander through but it was raining the day we went so we didn't spend as much time there as we could have
Spielzeugmuseum - it is a toy museum but it just angered my son because he couldn't play with the toys
Hirschgarten - we ate at the restaurant one day and the food was really good then went back the next day when it wasn't raining and played around outside and had the beer garden beer and food. There was music and it was lots of fun. Very family friendly.
We wandered the city proper and I went up some really tall tower to see a bird's eye view of the city. My husband and son stayed on the ground.
We also spent almost an entire day at the Munich Zoo. It was awesome for my son but if you have limited time there, I don't recommend it because it is just a zoo nothing spectacular.
Personally, I would not skip the Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg. It was on my bucket list and I found it amazing. The only reason my son and husband didn't come is because the night before, we left our windows open to sleep in our pension room and my son was attacked by about 7,000 mosquitos so he was up half the night itchy and miserable. They spent the day together at Hellbruin playing at the park and I went on the tour. If he hadn't been up all night they would have gone too.
