Weight Loss and Antidepressants.

I have been on the lowest dose of Lexapro for about 6 months to a year due to anxiety issues. I did not seem to have any issues with weight gain until a few months ago when I started taking the generic brand.

Has anyone had this issue? Or any tips on how I can lose the extra 10 lbs I have gained.

It is rather disheartening.

TIA

Re: Weight Loss and Antidepressants.

  • I used to be on the lowest dose of the the generic form of Lexapro for a year.  My doctor denied that it would cause weight gain but I read so many comments online to the contrary.  I came across a book called The Serotonin Power Diet which specifically addresses weight gain caused by anti-depressants.  I never fully did the diet and I never gained weight but it received good reviews.  My ultimate goal was to get rid of my anxiety attacks through diet, meditation, exercise, and cognitive behavorial therapy.  Thankfully I finally acheived my goal a few years ago.
  • This has happened to my sister as well, except she's put on about 50 pounds since she's been on it (about 2 1/2 years now).  I'm not sure though how much of that is from taking the meds or just getting more inactive, eating more, etc.  All she knows is it started coming on a couple months after starting it.  She realizes now though that she has to step up her work out game, like big time, and reduce her calorie intake.  It's a process, but it'll work.

You can do this too, remember 3500 cal = 1 pound.  Do the math, set a program for yourself and stay consistent with it.  Running is a great weight loss exercise, and eating lean meats and upping your veggie intake will give you results.
