Question about Marriage license

Ladies,

we applied for our marriage license a few weeks ago, then had it signed by a judge (we didnt had an officiant at our wedding). Judge said, she will mail the bottom portion of the marriage license to the court house. Are we supposed to get anything afterwards? Like a confirmation that our marriage is official or anything? Just wondering...

 Thanks!

Re: Question about Marriage license

  • Well I dont know how it works in other states. But I think your supposed to get the certified marriage license back after it is recorded. We have the original marriage license back to keep and a certified copy. So as of right now you have no form of a marriage license for yourselves???? Three weeks is crazy! We got ours back in like 3 days after we mailed it to be recorded.

We also have a certified copy of our marriage license, and we got it maybe 4 or 5 days after we were married

  • Yeah it probably varies by state but I don't recall getting a copy back.  I had to purchase all our copies, which are patiently awaiting me to go and actually change my name!

  • In Kansas, we have to pay for our certified copy, which is what we need to legally change our name.  I still haven't received mine; I'm a 5/26 bride.  Hopefully it'll be processed soon!

  • I would check with the clerk you first applied for your marriage license with. They are probably the ones that received the signed license back and whom you can get a certified copy from. As others have said, you'll need that to do all your name change business. In MA, there is a fee for a copy of this, which I'm guessing is the same for other states.

  • i'm a may 5th bride and we JUST got ours back in the mail last week.  we got the original back, i'll have to pay for certified copies if we want them.
  • We had to go in and get ours from the clerk.  The pastor mailed it to the clerk after the wedding and then it took less than a week to process for me to be able to go and pick it up.

  • We applied for our license, then had to wait 3 days. Then I got the license, gave it to the officient before the wedding. She signed and dated it and put it in the mail to the ocurt house after the wedding. Then it took another 3 days to process and I went in to get my certified copy, that I had to pay for.

It varies by state, I would just call and ask what's up.

  • In Illinois you have to send it in and then go to the courthouse it was sent to a few days later to get the official copy. We got married on 5/25 and I got the official on 6/1 because we just got back from the honeymoon. It was simple.
