Newbie with a question

Hi my name is Zims and I just got married. I post on the military brides board but figured I'd pop over here. H is Army but currently going through the MEB process. My question is what all do I need for a dependent ID? I just started changing my name through SS and my drivers license. Thanks in advance! And sorry if this gets asked a lot

Re: Newbie with a question

  • Hey Zims, Congrats on the marriage! My husband is in the Navy so I'm not sure if the process is a little different. But you need two forms of ID, any of the following can be used.
    • State Driver's License
    • Current Dependent ID - if you renew your ID before your previous ID expires
    • Social Security Card
    • U.S. Passport
    • School ID - must have a photo
    • Another Photo ID - produced by U.S. local, state, or federal government

Also if I remember correctly they need either the original marriage certificate or a certified copy to confirm the marriage. Another thing is you need a form. DD1172. It is a form that needs to be signed by your spouse. Preferably your spouse would need to be there with you.

You can check out this website to schedule an appointment to obtain the ID and there is also more information available there as well.

Hope this is what you needed.

  • Thanks! Will they keep the marriage certificate or no? Just want to make sure I have more than one copy
  • Hi. I'm Joyce. Congratulations on the marriage. My H is AF and they didn't keep our M C. All we needed was my DL and SS card and a copy of the M C. I am still new to this so I might be wrong for the process in the Army

My husband is Army, and to be honest I don't remember if they kept the copy of the M.C or not...but I was given like 7 copies of it to begin with. Your husband will need to be with you in order to get your dependent ID unless you have a specific power of attorney covering the fact that you can get an ID. But to be honest I don't think you can obtain that until after you have your first one.

But I would definitely go in with 2 forms of ID and your marriage certificate and hubby of course.

  • Hey Zimsgirl: no they don't keep the MC they just need to make a copy of it for records. The only reason they ask for the original or certified copy is to make sure it's legit and not forged.

  • They don't keep the marriage certificate I believe that just make a copy of everything right in front of you and then hand it all back. Your SO will need a copy though for a lot of random things at first though so if you have more then one copy I would keep one somewhere that's easily accessible for him.
