How do I get G to wear shoes??

G has been walking over a month now, so I've been putting shoes on him at home every now and then.  Obviously I didn't expect him to just start walking in them right away, but he refuses--he whines/cries when they're on and will only crawl or sit.  Today he had taken them off within 15 minutes.  I'd like to take him to the park, let him walk around outside, etc. but I can't if he won't wear shoes!  *sigh*

Also, should he be wearing the soft or hard sole shoes?  Any advice is greatly appreciated!

  • Keep putting them on him. Do it often and do it right as you're getting out of the car somewhere fun. Bring a toy he likes to push or carry or put him in the baby swing with them on, swing him and he may forget he's wearing them. C takes hers off too. Just show him wearing shoes=fun stuff Soft soled. I like Stride Rite.

  • I think soft soles right now are best. I got M to wear shoes by buying the ones with the squeakers in them. Plus it helped me know where she was.

To be honest M still doesn't really like to wear shoes. Whenever we get in the car she asks if she can take them off.

  • Gosh, all these things no one tells you about having kids! I didn't even think about getting them to wear shoes once they're walking. I learn something new every hour :)

  • Try ROBEEZ. They are leather with a leather sole, they allow the baby to feel the ground. They are usually around $30-$35 a pair but I have swear by them. I know I do not have kids but I have seen my friends use them with their kids adn they love them.

    No kidding! :)

I should have clarified--it's not so much the wearing them that I'm worried about---I figure once he's not so focused on the fact that they're on him, then he won't be as concerned about getting them off (the swing is a great idea for this!).  It's more the fact that he will barely even stand while they're on (he will with my help), so walking is not even in the picture right now.  He really acts pitiful when they're on him.  Earlier today when I put them on him he just laid down in the middle of the living room floor LOL.
    Thanks for the suggestions ladies!

  • if he is in hard sole shoes, it might be that he just has a hard time feeling the ground.  I think I remember reading that kids use their toes a lot when first walking (like in the first 6-9 months) and when they wear hard sole shoes it is really hard for them to keep their balance.  Sort of like when you put tape on a cats paws.

With that said, I really like the Robeez style shoes (you can get knock offs at Target for like $15).  Target also has some that G likes that are a firmer fabric, but I can't think of what they are called.

DH and I were just talking about how the shoe-wearing went today and H said "well him having shoes on is basically like putting tape on a cat's paws". Great minds think alike ;)

Thanks for the tip about Target because I'm not loving the prices I've seen so far!
