random - do you store your shoes in boxes?
I see people do this sometimes and while I guess its good keep dust/dirt off them, it seems like it takes an awful lot of extra room to do, plus I'd never remember what's where.

For the most part, yes. It's the shoes I don't wear often (not necessarily "nice", but they don't get pulled out all the time). The alternative is to throw them in a pile on my floor, and then I can't find anything. Most of the boxes have a picture of the shoe on the end of the box, so by far and large, I know exactly which shoes are where.
My tennis shoes, a pair of ballet flats I wear to work, and a pair of flip flops are in a huge shoe basket in our coat closet alongside E's tennis shoes, M's tennis shoes and her flip flops.
