Tokyo

We're trying to plan a trip to Tokyo in October.  Does anyone have advice on an area of town to stay in or things to do?

Thanks!

We just got back from a trip to Japan, including Tokyo. We stayed east of the train station in Shinjuku at the Best Western Shinjuku Astina and I really liked the area. There was good shopping nearby, lots of restaurants, the Shinjuku train station is convenient to just about every kind of train you'd need, and you're close to an awesome bar area called Golden Gai. It's sort of the going out/red light district, so when we got up early to go to the fish market we were sharing the sidewalks with super drunk people stumbling home. We thought this was awesome, but I suppose it's not for everyone.

As far as things to do, I thought Tokyo was a great urban environment, so just checking out different neighborhoods and local bars and restaurants was a lot of fun. The shopping is amazing. We went to a Yomiyuri Giants game, which was a fun experience but probably not a must do if you're not a baseball fan. We didn't do the official fish market tour because we got there too late, but we wandered around a bit and had sushi at one of the places just outside the market for breakfast. It's also where we saw the greatest concentration of tourists. Akihabara is fun to see, too.

  • I have been several times for work. I stayed in the Shinagawa Prince Hotel. The rooms are small but the train station is very convenient. The room includes breakfast at any of the restaurants including the buffet. (I did not realize that on my first trip there.)

    • I have not been to the fish market but my co-workers always recommended it.
    • Ginza is a great area - expensive shopping district.
    • Recommend you see Kabuki theater. There is a line just left of center of the building for day of cheap tickets. Buy a program so you understand what the play is about. There are usually three parts to the play. Each one is a few hours. I only did one. Check out their website for details.
    • Akihabara electronics distric is interesting to walk around.
    • Senso-ji Temple and other temples/shrines
    • Harajuku District on Sunday when the young people are dressed up in funky outfits (also shopping at Oriental Bazaar store there),
    • Roppongi is good for after hours drinking, etc. There is a pearl shop there called Janes Pearl shop,
    • Sumida river trip from Hama Detached garden to Asakusa (great for vendors/shopping, also a temple there.
  • No matter where you stay, you must visit a department store basement!  The basements have an amazing selection of gourmet foods, like beautiful pastries, exotic fish, $150 melons... it's mind-blowing!   We stayed in the Shibuya area with relatives and went to the Tokyu department store. It was my favorite part of the trip.

I also recommend visiting the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Observatory.  It has a great view of the city and it's free!

  • Shinjuku and Shibuya are probably my favorite districts in Tokyo. They're both bustling with crowds so people watching is fun. In Shibuya, I recommend going up the Starbucks on Shibuya Crossing right out of Shibuya Station(the huge intersection in movies), grabbing a seat and watch the crowds as they cross the intersection, it's always kinda fun. There's also a lot of shops in that area, department stores and souvenirs. If you are into themed restaurants, check out the Lock Up, also in Shibuya. Scariest restaurant I have ever been in!

In Shinjuku, my favorite place to visit is Shinjuku Gyoen. It's a huge park with a variety of different gardens from traditional Japanese to French, English etc. One of our favorite restaurants is also there, New York Grill. It's on the 52nd floor of Park Hyatt, the food is delicious and the views are amazing!
