blood in cat's stool

I adopted my kitten 2 months ago (he's almost a year old now).  The first time I took him to the vet for a check-up, he had bright red blood in his stool for a day or two after (which I assumed was from the thermometer irritating stuff).  He was at the vet's 3 or 4 weeks ago, and this time there's been blood in his stool almost every day since (still bright red).  He did fidget a whole bunch when the vet tech was trying to take him temp the last time, but I'm not sure that things would still be irritated several weeks later.  I'm probably going to call the vet on Monday.  I've just kept hoping it would clear up if something was irritated.

What do you think?  Should I give it more time?  Could it be something more serious?

Thanks!  I'm worried about my little kitty!

Re: blood in cat's stool

  • I would probably go ahead and call that's quite a long time. is the stool very hard or very soft?

  • It's been soft/normal.  I don't think it's out of the ordinary.

this is what I was thinking too. Did they take a fecal sample at the vet to check for intestinal parasites? GL! I say it wouldn't hurt to call the vet and voice your concerns.

  • It the stool is a normal consistency then there is no reason to have blood in the stool.  Diarrhea and constipation can both cause some blood but normal should not.

Calling is your best bet I think.

  • Thanks!  I got an appt for Tuesday morning, so we'll see!  I thought they checked for parasites on the initial visit, although maybe it was just for heartworm?  That is the one things that I came across when I google his symptoms a while ago.

  • I hope the appointment goes well. I was going to say that when my kitty was about 1 1/2 years old I took him to the vet for having blood in his stool and it turned out that he just wasn't able to digest food easily and it was tearing him on the way out. So he was put on Feline ID diet that is easily digestible and he has been great ever since.

    Best of luck!
