New here -wondering about buying a house
Hello! DH and I are contemplating buying a house. I am looking to go to grad school starting in January 2013. It will take me 2 years to get through school. We are considering moving out of state after I graduate from school. Should we buy a house just to possibly move in 2-3 years? Will we get our money back in that short amount of time? Anything else we should think about? Thanks!

Re: New here -wondering about buying a house
NO! No no no no no no.
- We bought a house where I'm going to school because we expected to keep it long-term, but have decided not to. We just talked with an agent this week and after 3 years and getting the neighborhood steal in the first place, we can only break even, even though we've made a bunch of upgrades. Two or three years just isn't enough time for appreciation these days.- There is nothing more frustrating than being studying for exams and the _____ breaks. If you rented, you just pick up the phone and it's not your problem. If it's your house, you have to make all the phone calls, and, oh yeah, open your wallet when your family income is already strapped.
- The regular maintenance that comes with a house is a PITA with a demanding school schedule. You have to get the HVAC serviced, you have to find a lawn care company, you have get the gutters cleaned, etc, etc.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
I know the previous posts are probably not what you wanted to hear, but I think they are right. I feel your pain! I had to wait through my DH's 5 years of doctoral grad school (plus 2 extra years) before we are finally now buying a house...
But I am so glad we did wait. Honestly DH and I are in a really great financial state right now because of that decision. Although at times it was really hard seeing all of my friends buy houses, while we were still renting, some of those same friends are now in bad financial situations because they bought a house too early.

Current recommendations are you need to be in your home for 7-10 years just to recoup your buyiing and selling costs (with no additional profit).
