I just found a tick on me!

I literally just had a complete panic attack in the shower. I felt something on my upper thigh/hip and when I looked down to see what it was, it looked like a big. Immediately I started to panic and screamed for Jimmy. He took one look, said it was a tick and that I needed to sit down (mind you I'm hysterically crying at this point) . Thankfully he was able to remove the entire tick, head an all, with a pair of tweezers. I was so upset and scared, and I made him wake up Katie and check her from head to toe just to be safe. Luckily, she didn't have any.

My father in law is in the pest control business and is going to send the tick out for testing just to be sure (we looked it up online and it's not supposed to be a lime disease carrying tick)

Maybe I over reacted, but it really scared me. I have never had a tick on me before and it really freaked me out . Now of course I'm worried about ever going to the lake again :(

Sorry for the long post, but I'm so upset and just needed to vent.

  • That would totally freak me out too! I don't think you over reacted at all.

  • If it's big, you probably don't have to worry. My parents live really close to the woods so we used to get them all the time growing up. It's actually a small percentage of ticks that carry disease so it's pretty unlikely you'd get sick.

Just watch the stop and if you get a bullyseye type rash, see a doctor. You can also get bug spray that repells ticks (Deep Woods Off is what we use). I'd use that instead of swearing off lake trips!

  • Ditto everything Kate said!

  • I would have freaked out, I don't think you overreacted either. I don't think we have ticks up here, so I can't even imagine what I would do if I found one on me.

  • I found one crawling on the back of my neck tonight right before dinner - I am still itching.  I think it is totally understandable to be freaked out if you aren't used to them. Just keep an eye on the spot like Kate said and you should be good do go.

  • Thanks ladies. Kate, I'm def going to keep an eye on it. Hopefully nothing happens because that will just upset me more. Luckily jimmy knew what he was doing and has had ticks on him before, so he was able to get the entire thing. Def a scary experience! In the end, I'm glad it was on me and not Katie though.

  • UGh, I hate ticks! we have so many here. I found one on Brin's cloths awhile ago and  he was on a blanket

  • You do know that most ticks are totally harmless right?

My dad had 5 on him one day and my brother was boasting he beat him with 6 after a hike.

If it was big enough for you to see easily you have absolutely nothing to worry about. My brother said he treated his clothes with some stuff that lasts through 6 washes and he is an avid hiker and hasn't had any ticks since doing that. He uses Frontline on his dog and she has been fine.
