Need SUV/crossover recommendations

I'm looking for recommendations for something that would hold 2 adults, a kid and 2 dogs, one of which is 100 lbs. Plus camping gear (a cooler and 2 or 3 large plastic storage bins worth of stuff). And it needs to hold us comfortably for loooonnnng road trips.

I know we could go to dealerships and look at all the options but it would be nice to narrow it down a little. There are just so many out there.

Re: Need SUV/crossover recommendations

  • Chevy Traverse or Buick Enclave...  The Traverse is cheaper.  Otherwise a GMC Acadia...  A lot depends on how much you want to spend...  If you really want room - a Suburban!!!

  • Ooh, I hadn't looked at any of those. I really like the space between the 2nd row of seats. It would be perfect for what we need.

  • Dh and I have a Ford Flex and love it.
  • We ended up getting a suburban. We looked at several other crossovers including the Acadia and Traverse. We will have 2 kids but no dogs. We wanted the 3rd row seats for future friends/family etc. If you have 3rd row in any of the crossovers you lose all your storage space. We take a lot of road trips and would not have room for 4 bags, strollers, toys, coolers, etc.

  • The nice thing is that some vehicles with the third row seating do fold down (I know this is the case with my parent's Rendezvous that the third row seat folds up so storage isn't lost at all...

That is what I thought at first. Then my DH made a good point. Why have a 3rd row seat then if the only way you get more storage is to fold them up. It defeats the purpose of a 3rd row.

  • Thanks everyone, we'll look at your suggestions.

While a Suburban would be nice, there's no way we would ever spend that much. Folding a 3rd row seat down is fine - we'd be buying it for storage space anyway.

    Thanks!

Late to the party, but I'd look at a Toyota Highlander. We have a Rav-4, which we bought for 2 dogs, a kid and camping gear as well, but we planned on using an on-to-of-the-car storage thing for camping gear. I absolutely LOVE my Rav-4. If/when we need a bigger vehicle, we'll look at the highlander or comparable in class across makers.

  • I've heard good news about the Highlander and the Traverse. Also, I've read poor reviews on Consumer Reports for the Subaru Tribeca (it's pretty much the only Subaru with poor scores...).
  • Thanks for this post, Jenny! We are starting to consider our next vehicle and this is helpful information. :)
