Reccomendations: Pediatritian vs. Family Practice?

I'm having our daughter in August and we plan to limit vaccinations. It seems that pediatricians around here are really pushy and dislike that. We've had people suggest to see a Family Practice instead because they are more laid back and I'm wondering if you all can speak on the comparisons. Have you experienced any pros/cons if you've used a fp instead of a ped and how accomodating were they at the hospital, or did they see the newborn shortly after? Thanks!

Re: Reccomendations: Pediatritian vs. Family Practice?

  • We go to a Family practice and they go by routine vaccations.  I think the majority of the practices around here are that way.  They will let you know upfront what their policy is and will not take you if you don't want to go accordingly to schedule (some will let you space them a little bit in between appointments.)

There were a few times we didn't go accordingly to schedule, but that was because one may have been out-of-stock and at the next appointments there would have been a lot of shots. My doctor would ask if I wanted to space them out a bit and she gave me recommendations.

In five years of being on "mommy boards", I haven't heard of anyone finding a doctor that allows limited vaccinations. You may want to search if there are any "green/natural parenting groups in the area. Someone there may have found someone. There is a list of groups here.

  • Thanks! I will check out the link for sure. From what I've heard, parents do have the ultimate decision on allowing vaccinations for their children, however I agree that if we were to refuse any, most Dr's would be quick to dismiss us as patients.  It would be nice to at least space them out instead of loading her up with several each visit.
  • We see a FP in Grandville.  We haven't delayed any vaccinations, so I can't speak for that.  But I am pretty sure that they would be open to a delayed schedule.  They always discuss what vaccines they are giving ahead of time and make sure we are OK with everything.

I like that one doctor sees all 3 of us.  At LO's well child visits he'll mention any reports he's received on H or myself.  (H had an ER visit that our doctor asked about).

There are 2 doctors in the practice, and his partner is the one that actually came to the hospital and looked LO over when he was born.  They are both really nice so I was fine with this.   We were at the hospital for 4 days and I'm pretty sure he stopped in at least twice, if not everyday.  Memory is a little fuzzy.

  • I searched my mom group Facebook page for this because there was some talk awhile back about this. These are the names of the docs that some recommended that don't make you follow the "regular" vaccination schedule.

Dr. Schippers offers the Dr Bob shot schedule - not sure where he/she is at but I'm sure you can google it.

Dr. Lake @ Western MI Pediatrics doesn't require the AAP vaccination schedule.

Good luck in your search for a doc for your little one! :)

Good to know! I would like to eventually find a new doc for my LO that is a bit closer to us and DH and I both need a general doc as well. Maybe I will have to make an appointment for DH to see him first. :)
