I need job applying help
XP on the "9 to 5 board" as well...
I applied for a teaching position at my old high school. I had to send them a resume, cover letter, and 3 letters of reference. They just posted a few more job openings, including a coaching position I'm interested in. It asks for a resume (including education and coaching experience/successes) and 3 letters of reference.
I plan to send
an updated resume with my playing and (limited) coaching experience. Do I
send 3 MORE letters of reference? I don't have any for coaching. How
else could I handle this- say in the cover letter I do not have any?
Refer them to the letters I already sent in for the teaching position
(or send them again?) and make some sort of statement about how the
positive things my references said about my teaching could transfer onto
the field for coaching?
Also, should I mention the position I already applied for to remind them I put my name in for a teaching job (most of the coaches are teachers at the school also so I'm thinking it wouldn't hurt my chances of getting both spots)?
Give me any advice or thoughts you've got. I really want to get this job... the teaching one at least. I can't take the coaching job unless I get the teaching one since I'd have to move.

I would err on the side of giving them more info than less. So I would probably send 3 other reference letters with that application.I would just try and say how your teaching skills would apply to coaching. After all coaching involves teaching skills about the sport plus things like teamwork, hard work, good sportsmanship, etc.
I also don't think a call to a teacher you may have been close with or the principal would hurt. Let them know you applied for both jobs. They might be partial to hiring an alum.
It seems redundant but sending the same three, three new or a mix of references would work. Three new ones would be best. You should not have to make them hunt for your references as that wont go over well.
You could mention in the cover letter that you like teaching as well as couching. That may help them get the hint you are suited for a duel position job.
Both resumes should be different. They will be mostly the same but each one should be geared toward the position you are applying for.
I would also give them a call letting them know that you applied for both positions. So something like "Hey, I sent in my resume for couching. Did ya get it? Also I recently sent in my resume for teaching. Thank you for the chat". Not that casual of course but you get the idea.

I agree. Definitely call a teacher you're close with or the principal. Networking helps a ton in getting jobs!

I'm worried about the letters of reference since I don't have any for coaching. I was a coach for a 4th-5th grade girls basketball team about 10 years ago while in high school and my dad ran the program. I barely remember doing it since it was so long ago. I'm hoping talking myself up about what I've done with sports (I was a varsity goalie at this HS for 4 years, plus doing stats, scoreboard, etc) will help me. I also don't think a letter from my dad, even though he headed the basketball program, doesn't seem too legit since I have much more of a personal relationship with him than professional.
I want to send it in ASAP (they have quick turnaround for interviews normally) so I'm not sure about getting new letters of rec since I'd have to contact people I haven't talked to in a while (my HS lax coach, an old basketball coach I was captain for, not sure who else) and I'd feel bad for asking for it within the week.
The previous coach in this spot was one of my teammates and classmates so she was fresh out of school, didn't have a teaching degree, and probably didn't have too much coaching experience (maybe some in another sport but I know definitely not lax). Another one of my classmates got a job teaching and is a coach too and I'm positive he didn't have any coaching experience. So I have hope that I at least have a chance...
BLAHHHH I can't wait to be done with job applying. I worry over details too much since I'm getting desperate :P
I think I learned that the hard way last year when a similar teaching position opened up and I didn't get it, but someone with similar credentials that I know did. This year I have a veteran teacher within the same department pushing for me and a well-known alumni wrote me a recommendation. One of my old coaches is on some board of trustees sorta thing (it's a private school) and he personally gave a copy of my resume to the principal.
Only problem was that was in April. They froze the hiring/re-hiring process until now because the principal was really sick so I'm just hoping they didn't forget it all. They specifically say "no phone calls" on all their job ads so I don't want to call and piss them off asking about my application.
Yikes, yeah, I wouldn't contact the principal then. But I would definitely contact the teacher that is pulling for you letting him/her know that you applied to the teaching position, as well as the coaching position.
