Does anyone have any reviews of the DR? DH and I found an awesome deal on Living Social yesterday for an all inclusive resort, Wyndam to be exact. Just looking for some reviews on the area. I believe its in Puerto Plata (sp?). I have heard alot of people don't care for the DR, any thoughts on that? TIA!
Re: Dominican Republic?
I'm biased towards Puerto Plata, I was born there. It is on the North Coast and while beautiful, is very different than P*nta Cana -which has become more popular over the years- has much to offer.
Culturally, there are many things to see and do on the North Coast. Brugal rum factory tours, open air market, amber museum, and lots more. The Wyndam is located in Cabarete, Puerto Plata. Cabarete is a cute little town known worldwide for kiteboarding and windsurfing.
The water is the Atlantic ocean as opposed to the Caribbean Sea in P*nta Cana, but it still is great! Waves are not bad at all and the water is nice and warm.
Let me know if you have specific questions and I can try and answer them. Also, if you search the boards, I once posted a ton of touristy info that someone else once posted a question about.
I went there last year with my hubby and kids. We stayed at the Majestic Elegance in Punta Cana. Hmmm, I can't say I loved it. It was a very nice trip, a nice resort and nice beach but nothing that really wowed me.
I have been to several other places in the Caribbean and I still really love Mexico.
But if you are looking to relax, lay by the pools and beaches and enjoy each others company, then getting a great deal makes it worth it. Have fun!
I also stayed at Majestic Elegance in Punta Cana for our honeymoon. The resort and scenery was breathtaking. However, I can't say much about the food. I think I'm probably the first one to actually LOSE weight on their honeymoon, to be honest. We were there for a week and I had lost 10 pounds by the time we got back. And I'm NOT a picky eater.
Anyhow, Punta Cana in general was really pretty- I would 100% go back to that same resort IF they improved the food.
I also have stayed in Punta Cana at the H10 resort ocean blue. Yes the water is beautiful but the food was terrible. It was not a place to which I would return. I have travelled extensively and there are much nicer places. I did not visit Puerto Plata.
On the other hand I love Puerto Rico. There are some great places to stay there.
We stayed at the AI adults only Iberostar Grand. It was grand, to say the least.
As it was nice, we'd probably try a different spot next time. Not really our "crowd."
