Talk to me about water weight

Last week I started really focusing on my goal of drinking more water.  I averaged about 50 oz/day (my goal is to get to 100 oz/day), with an 80 oz day thrown in there.  Weigh-in was this morning and I gained .6 lbs.  Normally a small gain wouldn't freak me out, but it's only week 2 back on WW--I should be losing big right now, not gaining.  So, could it be water weight?

Re: Talk to me about water weight

  • I'm wondering the same. I've significantly upped my water intake lately too, in addition to being a bit more conscious about what I eat. I've also been much more active... and somehow I've gained 3 pounds in the past few weeks, according to my scale.

  • Did you eat anything salty? Are you within a week of getting your period? Were you inadvertently wearing a heavy piece of jewelry?

A myriad of things could cause a .6lb weight gain. If you're drinking a lot of water, and urinating often (as that much H2O should make you do) then you're doing great and it should level out soon.

    Good luck!

  • There could be a lot that causes a .6lb weight "gain." Did you have a big loss your first week back to WW? You should come over to the GBCN H&F board. Also, some of the July 2011 moms started a fitness FB group and I post there all the time. Super motivating, let me know if you want to join!

Scales do suck. I wish I could quit compulsively stepping on mine.

Did you eat anything salty?  Nope

Are you within a week of getting your period? Nope

Were you inadvertently wearing a heavy piece of jewelry? Naked weighing for this girl (I weigh in at home, obviously lol)

Good luck!  Thanks!  I'm not enjoying peeing 150 times a day, but I do feel better.

My first week back I lost 2.6 lbs.  So a good loss, but not huge.  I really should have DH hide the scale to keep me from weighing every day, but oh well.

  • You don't need me to tell you this but weighing yourself daily is not healthy. Are you working at as well or just cutting calories? I was disappointed when I kept *gaining* but I am lifting like a maniac and muscle weighs more than fat so there you go.

Yeah, I know I shouldn't weigh every day but it helps keep me on track.  And I've had small gains while doing WW before---this one is just getting to me because it's week 2, way too early to gain anything.  Plus, as someone who's never been a water drinker, I'm genuinely curious about the water weight aspect.

As for exercise, I'm walking in the mornings with G.  It's not a lot but it's something and it's what I have time for.  I figure if that whole "80/20" rule about weight loss is true then focusing on diet will still make a huge difference.

  • I don't have a scale at home, but the hotel I stay at for business trips does so sometimes I weigh myself multiple times a day to see how much it varies (in the morning before going to the toilet, after the toilet, before dinner, after dinner, before bed). I've seen a 3-5 pound variation in the course of the day depending on how much water I drank and how recently, how much I ate and how recently, how much I ate the day before, the humidity, the phase of the moon, etc. So...don't worry about 0.6 pounds. If you weighed yourself again, I'm sure it'd be different!

True, but given my hubby just lost over 60 pounds in less than six months...the gym is most helpful. I have certainly cut back on the number of Pioneer Woman recipes I am cooking at night but overall, exercise, exercise, exercise.  Then you can essentially eat whatever you want!

Eating something salty is probably no indication of your sodium intake. Are you eating a lot of pre-packaged / processed foods (like weight watchers or lean cuisine type meals)?  Those things are LOADED with sodium.

I was guilty of eating those all the time, but I can't even remember the last time I had a Smart Ones meal.
