Talk to me about Spark People

So I had a serious wakeup call yesterday while shopping for back to work clothes. I tried on a pair of pants, asked for the next size up and the girl says, "Oh they don't make a larger size, that's the biggest one." For someone who was a size 6 this time last year, that was a big kick in the (wide) butt. Clearly this baby weight is not coming off on its own.

Sooo...I've heard some ladies on here talk about Spark People - tell me all about it!

I am a sparkpeople member and found it very helpful awhile back, although haven't used it in ages. I just used it to track what I ate every day and made sure I stayed within a certain calorie range, but there are forums and other features as well. I did lose the 10 lbs that I wanted to drop and would definitely recommend it.

I know bunnybean has had success with it so I'm sure she'll weigh in (pun intended, sorry, I couldn't help it!).

  • I've lost 33 lbs with Spark People (I have like 120 to go for my ultimate goal).  I really like it.  It's really easy to log your calories and have a work out plan made for you.  But you really have to be committed to stick with it.  I haven't lost any weight in like 3 weeks.  I have stopped being super into it, and I'm trying to get back.  I still log the calories, but I rarely work out or talk on the boards.  You have to keep engaged in those things for sure.

  • Wooo whoo! I just signed up. I love the idea of monitoring my calorie intake and having a place to track work outs. I'm trying to stay fit. Old age is hitting fast and I suspect my metabolism is going to crap out soon. Thanks for the tip!
  • I haven't had a ton of luck with SparkPeople, mostly because I have sucked at sticking with it.  I'm rejoining Weight Watchers tomorrow.  I hate to spend the money, but I was much more successful with it.  I lost about 40 pounds before I had to stop going for financial reasons, and I've put on about 10-12  of that in the last year.  But my inability to succeed with SP is because of me, not because of a problem with SP.

Bridey, I'm doing the same thing!  I did WW several years ago and lost about 25 lbs.  I had been maintaining within a few pounds for a few years, but my back injury, chronic pain, and subsequent surgery -- plus, I must admit, some laziness and indulgence as a result of being sad about said back injury --  has led to my packing on around 10 pounds.  It's just disgusting.  I can't fit in half my clothes right now, and I've been having a tough time getting motivated to do anything about it.  But I decided to rejoin WW online, b/c that's where I always have success.

AND I went to the pool today for the first time in a few weeks!  Yay!

Ultimately, whatever tool you use, the accountability of journaling is key to any successful weight loss.  Something about having to write it down makes me think twice. And it saves me from forgetting that I indulged at something during lunch when I want an afternoon snack.

  • p.s. Bunny!!!  33 lbs is amazing!  Congratulations -- I know you've been working really hard.  That's awesome work, lady.  That's over 20% of your ultimate goal!  So impressive.

    Aww, that's so nice!  Thanks!

  • I have joined and poked around their site a few times and haven't really found anything good, but maybe if enough of us are on here, we can form a private group over there.  I haven't felt like using the boards and stuff there because one set of internet friends is enough.  But if it's the same people there, that might motivate me.  I need to lose 50 or 60 pounds, so I would totally be up for combining forces.
  • If anyone is interested in WW, let me know.  I think it's a fantastic program, especially the Core program.  It's perfect for foodies b/c it really focuses on whole grains, lean meats, fresh fruits/veggies.  You have some extra points to play around with for things like wine and real cheeses (i refuse to eat fat-free cheese).  It's definitely livable.  When I was on Core, I basically ate very healthfully Sun - Fri afternoon, then went out for dinner both Fri/Sat nights and had my ice cream as a treat on Saturday.  It worked well within the weekly extra points we got on Core, and I was able to lose consistently, even not tracking what I ate fri/sat (which usually included wines, desserts, dinners out, and pizza...)
