Vacuum Recs?

We need a new vacuum. Ours should have been replaced like last week. The suction is horrible and the hand attachment suction is pretty much non-existent. Do you have a vacuum that you would recommend?

I would love to buy a Dyson but Ryan doesn't want to spend that much money on a vacuum cleaner so I'm trying to look at other alternatives.

We have two dogs and a cat so needless to say I'm vacuuming at least two times per week. Attachments is pretty much a must and I'd prefer one that can be used on bare floors as well as carpet since we have both in our home.

TIA!

Re: Vacuum Recs?

  • We got a Dyson for 50% at Fred Meyer (a PNW store). They just happened to be having a sale when we needed one. My recommendation would be to get a cheapy dirt devil or something to tide you by if you need something now, and then keep your eye out for a steep sale.

For your current vacuum, have your tried a new filter? Taking it all apart and cleaning out as much as you can and putting it back together? Obviously the putting it back together part can be tricky, but I have gotten another couple months out of vacuums by getting all the junk out of the inside.

  • We have this one.  We got it about a year ago because our 25 year old hoover finally died.  That is why we stuck with Hoover again.  We don't have any carpet except some rugs so I didn't want to splurge on a dyson.  This one gets all of mine and Naismith's hair really well.  I think I paid something like $100 for it on sale.

ETA:  My favorite feature is the automatic cord rewind!  I never knew that existed, but I LOVE having it!  I hated winding the cord.

Is your hair long? I have the worst time with my vacuum and my hair. I shed easily and my hair gets wrapped around the bristles so much that I have to unscrew the bottom and cut my hair off so that it doesn't burn out the motor and/or break a belt (which has happened) every single time we vacuum.

I'd love to find something that worked better than what we have now.

  • I've used Hoover and Dirt Devil but I absolutely SWEAR by my Dyson. I have to vacuum about every other day or every 3 days (two large mostly inside dogs). I actually currently have all hardwood floors and it works great. It also worked great on my carpet in my last place, which were super hard to keep clean with two dogs. It's super easy to empty/clean, moves so easy I dont feel like I'm straining, doesn't need any filters or anything and the attachments are easy, too. With dog hair that gets under furniture and in between nooks, the attachments get back there pretty well. I went to use my best friend's regular vacuum (dirt devil I think) and oh my gosh compared to the Dyson, it felt heavy and immoveable. I agree that if there's a way to get a Dyson by getting one on sale, it's worth every penny. :)

My hair is reasonably long.  Right now it is about 4 inches below my shoulders.  I haven't had to get my hair out of the bristles with this one yet, but I have in the past.  There are fewer bristles on that vacuum than any of my other vacuums.
