RP: Nice cross-body bag recommendations for Europe?

I posted this on the F&B board, but thought I could get some advice on here :)

My sister and her husband will be honeymooning in Europe in a few months, and she has been looking for a nice cross-body bag that will go with her outfits. She has a lot of knit dresses and maxi skirts she is wearing, so a cross-body bag that is a neutral color (she prefers lighter color if possible) and can go with nicer-casual outfits and then out to dinner (she doesn't want to carry a separate bag for dinners).

Any suggestions would be great- thanks!

Re: RP: Nice cross-body bag recommendations for Europe?

  • I bought this bag for Europe and LOVED it - plenty of room for stuff, but not big enough to be bulky.  I got it in black but it comes in a bunch of colors.

  • I just got a crossbody bag for travelling.  Coach Kristin Leather Hobo It has an attachable strap for crossbody.  I found one in gray but that color is no longer available online.

I looked at the dimensions for this bag- it says the depth if 1.5"- does the bag seem small? What can you fit in here?

  • I may be in the minority but I don't understand why everyone wants to take a crossbody bag to Europe. The first time we went I took one b/c that is what everyone said to do. When we got over there I totally stood out b/c all of the local women were carrying their nice leather handbags. My first stop in Venice was to buy a brand new shoulder bag so I would fit in. My husband kept the cash/cards/passports in his money belt and I kept guidebooks/maps/my stuff in my purse and felt like I fit in much better. Just might be something to think about.

  • I think the advantage of the crossbody bag over the shoulder bag is it puts less strain on your one shoulder when you are carrying it.  I was in Paris and London and I never felt like I "stood out' because I was carrying a crossbody bag.
  • This is the bag that I got (in white) for our France/Italy trip last year. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004UO22TE/?m=A3FC06XHYDMFE&ref=ox_sc_act_title_4&ie=UTF8 I got it to use as a diaper bag & not have it look like one.  I still use it every day.  Very rarely crossbody, but I can definitely do it if I need to!

I wear a crossbody bag here in the US, so why wouldn't I want to wear one in Europe?  I prefer to have my hands free when I'm out shopping, and if I'm going somewhere that I'm going to be taking pictures that is doubly true.

  • Thanks for everyone's recommendations! I'll be forwarding this info to my sister.

It holds my camera, small wallet and cell phone.  I dont carry around a lot of excess junk in my purse.

Ditto on the shoulder strain...thats why i prefer crossbody for travelling. I usually have my camera in my bag and it adds weight.

I also like the fact that most of the smaller crossbody bags lay flat and since i tend to travel in the winter they fit nicely under my coat.

Another ditto from me. My shoulder bag just died, and I had to switch to a cross-body because that was all I had in my closet that would fit my iPad. It's definitely much easier on my shoulders (though not as good as my leather backpacks). As for fitting in, maybe this is just another case of Oslo being more practical than the continent, but since I started paying attention, I see at least 25% cross-body bags on the street. But I also see at least 1% leather backpacks on women, so maybe we're European fashion deficient.

PS - I'm lazy about it here, and like most women, I toss my cross-body behind my back when I'm walking. In Stockholm, our hotel actually had a PSA poster reminding people not to do this because it's easy to pick-pocket. And Stockholm isn't nearly as pick-pockety as a lot of Europe! So if you do opt for a cross-body instead of a shoulder bag, make sure it hangs in front of you rather than behind.

Haha! You'd look like a local here! I think black all stars and jeans might just be the national costume of the young Norwegian! (All you need to do is add a massively huge scarf and big sunglasses, and you would disappear in the crowd.)

Cross-body purses & backpacks. Jeans. Sneakers. Bright rain coats.  ...Someone needs to tell the Norwegians to stop dressing like tourists!

I bought this for my trip to Italy in July.  I wanted something big enough to hold the iPad, but small enough not to be bulky.  I obviously haven't used it yet, but thus far I am really happy with it.

  • Im a little late! I bought this bag at the Cole Haan outlet and I love it, I use it everyday. Big enough for my wallet, camera, phone and makeup but not big enough for an iPad or anything:
