My cat was diagnosed with diabetes.

Yesterday my cat was diagnosed with diabetes.  She has lost a lot of weight (which was one of the main reasons why i brought her to the vet) she also, started drinking alot more and peeing a lot more.

She is only 5 years old, so she is very young. Anywho, i bring her in on saturday to start learning about the treatment and insulin.

My question is does anyone have any experience with a cat with diabetes? Any pointers/information.

Thanks!

Re: My cat was diagnosed with diabetes.

  • It is very manageable, usually you do an insulin injection once per day in the scruff of their neck.  I used to catsit a kitty with diabetes and he would get a treat every time he got his injection....which meant you shook the treat bag and he would come running, then wait patiently.  It doesn't hurt them at all and is very easy to give.

Is she overweight?  What do you guys feed?  I would make sure to get her on a grain free food and to include wet food in her diet.  The research shows that diets inappropriate for obligate carnivores are one of the leading causes of diabetes.

  • Thank you! She WAS overweight, but she lost a lot of weight, which is the main reason we realized something was wrong. I feel guilty that i didn't do something sooner, but I am trying to move past that and start a new healthy lifestyle going forward.

Tomorrow we are going to meet with the vet and go over everything we need to know, in regards to insulin, diet etc.

I was feeding her dry food mainly, but now i am feeding her fancy feast wet food. I will change her food to whatever is healthiest. - CRAZY i never realized cat's can have diseases just like humans. I.E. diabites.

I have no advice, but I hope your kitty feels better soon!
