First Trip to Savannah---Suggestions?

We are looking to go on our first trip to Savannah, GA in mid-August for a week.  Any tips/suggestions on best places to stay, eat, activities, etc.  I know we want to go to the beach at Tybee Island for a day or two, but other than that I'm not sure what all our itinerary will include.  TIA!

Re: First Trip to Savannah---Suggestions?

  • I really liked the Dresser-Palmer House.  It's a well-maintained b&b in a beautiful neighborhood right next to Forsyth Park, walking distance to everything.  The Wisteria Room is very private with it's own entrance out to a nice little courtyard.  We had a fabulous, romantic dinner at Alligator Soul and good lunches at Vic's on the River and Soho South Cafe.  I really enjoyed the evening ghost tour with Savannah Walks - it was fun and interesting but not cheesy like some other ghost tours.  If you haven't done so already, I recommend reading Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil before you go, and then visit the Mercer-Williams House for a tour.  It's a great book (based on a true story) that gives you a sense of Savannah, and the house is where the story takes place.  Leave some time to just walk around the different squares - Savannah is such a lovely city.  We didn't get to Tybee because it rained the day we had planned to go to the beach.
  • we stayed at Avia and it was great.  I LOVED Savannah and can't wait to go back some day.  Hilton Head Island is also a short drive away (not as close as Tybee but a classy resort town).

We did a ghost tour, took the casino boat out one night, ate at Paula Deen's place and spent lots of time strolling through the squares with an open container.  Great city!

  • I loved the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil suggestion! MY fav spot was the Bonaventure Cemetary tour. so pretty! (and secluded)

The Olde Pink House for a nice meal. Paula Deen's is a guide book must do. our B&B but it was lovely. The Gastonian.

Have fun! Tybee is gorgeous but I like the idea of checking out HH, too.

2 Corinthians 12:9 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

  • We stayed in a VRBO garden apt. rental by Forsyth park and it was lovely. http://www.vrbo.com/383273 Quiet residential neighborhood, with a great court yard, really gave us a taste of Savannah. Plus I love having a kitchen for the stashing of snacks and drinks.

Food: We ate at Mrs. Wilkes for the 'famous' fried chicken and lunch service. It was OK. Some of the food is really good but it is all extremely salty. ( My wedding ring was almost stuck on my finger from the bloat!) I didn't think the hour and a half line was worth the 20 minutes we got to eat before they start clearning tables. Crystal Pub- Loved it! Great beer, good food. We also ate at Wiley's BBQ outside the city, it was tasty!

To do: I loved walking from our rental down to the River. It's just gorgeous to walk through all the different squares and streets. In the morning we'd get some coffee from the starbucks at Forsyth park and just walk around. River Street was fun in an tacky touristy way. We did some drinking and just people watching. I also did some shopping at the Savannah Bee Company for gifts while there.

Also, be sure to get the SCAD shop. It's all things made by the students at the college and has some wonderful, unique things.

I really loved the city and can't wait to visit again!

  • August is friggin hot here.  Be prepared.  If you can hit the beach on the weekdays, I would.  Traffic and parking will be far better.

There are so many things to do around here.  You won't run out of any stuff to do.  There are dolphin tours, kayak tours, historic tours, ghost tours, pub crawls and all sorts of other things.  We have so many museums for you to check out.  There are shops, stores, historic homes and cemeteries.  I would stop by the visitor's center and see what there is you are interested in.  They also have several trolley tours that offer 2 days tickets for $10.  You can hop on and off the trolley at any stop all day long.  Those are a great way to learn the city.

As far as places to eat, I could go on all day.  Downtown, try SOL, Soho South Cafe, Skylers, Boar's Head, Olympia Cafe, Mrs Wilke's, Clarry's, B Mathew's Bakery, Harris Baking Company, One Eyed Lizzies, Garibaldi's, Leoci's, Cha Bella.  There are more, but I'll only confuse you.

On Tybee, try Fannies, Sundae Cafe, North Beach Grill or The Crab Shack.

  • I am going in mid August too! We are staying at The Westin Savanah Golf and Resort Spa. The reason is we are form Florida and will not be going to the beach but we wanted something with a nice pool because it is going to be hot and we want to relax in a pool after walking around.

I have been before but others in our group have not. We will mostly be walking around to the squares, eating at several restaurants and taking some ghost tours.

  • Here's my trip review of Savannah and Tybee Island.  Very cool place.  I want to go back.
