Hi all! I need a little advice from people who have previously been to Key West.
My husband and I are supposed to leave for Marathon and Key West on Friday (tomorrow for some of you in the East). When looking at the weather, there is some tropical weather forming in that area that could lead to some significant rain. When researching what to do in Key West during rain, we read that a lot of times it will just rain for a short bit and then clear up. We would be totally fine if this happened but are concerned that it might be a little longer lived since there is some possibility of more severe weather in the Caribbean (as with all forecasts, they're still unsure how long this will hang around). What would you do? At first we wanted out and were looking for other options but we are now reconsidering a bit. Would you take your chances and hope it doesn't rain too much or would you pay the change fee on your plane tickets (the only negative) and try to find somewhere else to go?
On that note, due to how last minute this all is, if we want to try and stay with a beach vacation it looks like Cabo is the place to go. Airline flights are incredibly expensive this last minute and Cabo is the cheapest we've found. I don't know anything about Cabo and we are not good at just laying at a resort all day. What fun things are there to do in Cabo besides sit at a pool and drink? Any excursions you'd recommend?
Any help would be great. I'm going to be looking at the National Hurricane website again tomorrow, as it's had significant updates every 5 hours or so, and will have to make a decision. Thanks is advance!
Re: Travel help please - Key West and Cabo
We are in KW right now and have been since tue. We have had clouds and rain the whole time. There is a hell of a storm track coming up from Cuba and its not stopping any time soon. Today we may see sun for approx 4 hrs but then back to clouds and rain. This is our third year here and the first time we have ever seen rain like this. Thank heavens we have one hell of an amazing room since we've spent a lot of time in it. Yesterday we spent a boat load to go out to the dry tortugus only to tour the fort for a bit then run back to the boat due to torrential down pours. On the way back into kw the seas were so rough that at least a dozen people got sick. We were able to walk Duvall st for about 2 hrs on tue and about the same last night. There are museums here ( we already been to those in previous trips) there isn't much to do if it's pouring unless you don't mind getting soaked. This weather is not good for snorkeling as with the wind and rain combo the surf is rough ( good swimming skills a must). From what I am seeing on Acuweather this is supposed to continue into next week ( looks like sun comes back on tue) . To go or not would be totally your call. I personally if I had known it was going to be like this, would have cancelled. I would have stayed home and gone to our beaches ( MD or NJ) since we seem to be having more sun and heat than here.
We have pics posted ( monday is key largo the tue and yesterday are kw) in the link above my siggy pic

Dang, based on monkeygirl's post, I'd cancel pronto! Get yourself to Cabo... !
Agree. So far today we haven't had rain ( yet but it's coming), we still have cloudy skies it is hot (about 92 factoring in humidity) the water is warmer than yesterday but the surf is still very rough and not good for snorkeling. We just got back from Ft. Taylor and although we did go in the ocean it was so rough we couldn't really swim and definetly couldn't snorkel.
Right now most peeps are out and about in town or like us chilling in their room or on the baby beach here at the Hyatt. Even the bars at night haven't been as hopping as normal. Now maybe tonigh they will be as we aren't supposed to get as bad of a rain fall as the last two nights. Go figure, our last night here and we might finally be able to get out to the bars without getting drenched.
Honestly, I am a bit peeved that we spent all this money only to have to go home and head to our beaches to get some sun (although for the past two years here at the exact same time we've had perfect weather). Oh well, you can't predict the weather and after all, it is tropical storm/hurricane season.
Eta: I lied, it is now raining again.

Thanks for the replies. I don't know why I didn't think of the tripadvisor forums since I look there for everything else. Thanks for the reminder!
We had thought we would just try to wing it but you're making me reconsider again, monkeygirl. We are supposed to leave tomorrow. Our first real day would be Saturday, staying that night and Sunday night in Marathon. We go to Key West on Monday and stay until Thursday. I was hoping that maybe things would clear up a bit by the time we actually got the Key West; however, upon hearing this and just looking at the National Hurricane Center website, we might have the change again. Ugh! It's changed from 30% chance of tropical cyclone to 50% just since this morning.
Anybody know of any good last minute deals? I wish we could just go to our beaches but we lack quite a few of them in Wiscons.
I'd definetly cancel. Try travel zoo for last minute deals.

Tell me about it. It's said to say but this is only the second trip were I have ever been happy to be going home ( the first one was last year in Antigua when I had food poisoning the whole trip).

Yuck! I wish we could just reschedule but my husband had to trade with coworkers to get these days off so this is our only chance of a vacation the rest of the year.
