field hockey

did anyone here play field hockey as a kid or in high school or in college, etc?  mount de sales is offering a summer camp and i was debating sending kira.  she loves the idea of playing a sport with a skirt and having a stick to hit the ball with.  i know nothing of field hockey.  tell me about it.

Re: field hockey

  • I played field hockey in high school and college...and LOVED it.  I didn't start playing until the summer before my freshman year of high school - I played soccer growing up but didn't want to play in high school.

I know that there have been quite a few rule changes since I played, but it's not a difficult sport to pick up.  I think it's more frustrating for parents to watch because there are A LOT of whistles and if you don't know the rules, it can get annoying.  If Kira shows interest - sign her up!  At that age, the equipment isn't terribly expensive so the investment isn't large if she doesn't like it.  (sticks can cost upwards of $300)

If you have more specific questions...let me know.  I'm happy to help.  I miss it terribly.

  • I played in high school!  I would say do it!  The first time I ever picked up a stick was in high school and I wish I would have at least known the basics before I got to be that age.  There weren't a ton of "rec" leagues around for field hockey when I was that age, so if she's interested I would sign her up.  Not that she's going to be interested in it when she is older, but it can't hurt!  I can't imagine that they will be getting all that technical in terms of rules and stuff with kids, but who knows.  I think that if I had been involved in a team sport like field hockey, instead of something like softball, when growing up I would have liked it more.  Softball was stressful to me as a child because I always felt so much more pressure to perform like when batting and stuff.  Field hockey is less stressful in terms of everyone  working as a team and there are less instances where you feel all alone and like the outcome depends on what you do.  Does that make sense??  Probably not...I was a sensitive and weird child! Stick out tongue
  • I played in high school (rec leagues) and loved it! If she is showing interest, I would definitely encourage her to give it a try.  It's pretty easy to pick up and Investment is minimal, like previous post said.

I only see benefits here - she gets to try something new, engage in team building, be physically active, and look cute in a skirt!

  • I started in elementary school, then played on our middle school and high school team until I decided that I wanted to play tennis more.  I had so much fun with it though and would recommend it.  I went to camps too and always thought that it was a fun way to spend some of the summer.  It's great for team building and physical activity.

  • I played in high school and love love loved it!  Once I got into it I always did rec teams and summer leagues.  Knowing how great it is now, I wish I would have been involved in it when I was younger.
