Two potential jobs... how do I not burn bridges?!

I have a job that I am supposed to begin training for in the next couple weeks (nothing set in stone time-wise yet), but then a job just opened up at the company I worked at before I had my daughter, in the same department and everything. I would really like the job at the company I have already worked for, but I still have to go through the application process. I am meeting with my old manager this week, should I tell her the whole situation? Is there an appropriate way to tell her I would like to work for her but would need an offer very soon? Can I somehow delay my training at the other job - should I tell the situation to the manager there?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! TIA!

  • I agree with Dr. L.  I wouldn't say anything to your manager until you have an offer from your previous company.  You would be burning more bridges by telling her now than waiting for a few weeks.  JMO

  • I'm not sure why you feel you can't go through training at the job you currently work at. I wouldn't say anything to your current manager. Depending on the relationship you have with your old manager, you may tell her what's going on, and ask discreetly what your chances of coming back are. Even if your manager pretty much guarantees you the job, don't say anything to your current employer until things are set in stone. If you do get the job, then just explain to your current employer that you were presented an opportunity that you felt you couldn't turn down. Handling it in a professional manner shouldn't burn any bridges, and if you are treated badly after telling them, then it's not a company you wanted to work with in the first place. Good luck!
