Hot weather party food

I am working on a menu for Aisling's 2nd birthday party.  It will be held on an August afternoon in a (non air-conditioned) park pavilion.  So we will have shade, access to outlets, but no cooling system (beyond coolers with ice for drinks, of course).  There are grills that we can use, but I'm trying to think of alternatives, as I don't want DH stuck at the grill in the heat all afternoon either.  We were thinking of doing simple foods, like a chicken finger tray, pretzel tray, fruit salad, and I have someone doing custom cupcakes and cake.  Of course I know I need more than that- but wanted to see some thoughts from you girls on what might hold up in weather that could very well rival today's temps.

Re: Hot weather party food

  • You could pick up some pizzas, if you want something easy.

  • I think pizzas are your best bet.  Otherwise, hoagies with no dressings (bring bottles).
  • I think catering from qdoba isn't out of the ballpark pricey. taco bar is great in hot weather
  • I was going to say tomato pie - that way no problem with cheese if it sits.

  • Watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, some sort of cold fruit salad!

  • Pasta salad (watch the meat and cheese content just in case it gets too hot), fruit salsa and pita chips (pinterest has a recipe for this), wrap tray (maybe put it on ice?).

  • I would do a big green salad with dressing on the side and maybe a pasta salad. Dry hoagies, mixed pizza's cut into smaller squares for easy picking

We have a big picnic on the beach every year, for the stuff we want to keep cool, I get a few large silver trays from the dollar store, load them with ice and then put the bowls and things on top. It will only last a few hours but enough to do the job for the time being

  • You can do a grilled veggie tray--it can be enjoyed at room temp or warm. I grilled zucchini, eggplant, scallions, plum tomatoes, and asparagus and brought it to a BBQ.

  • Thanks everyone- appreciate the suggestions!

  • I went to a 1st bday park party last year.  They had pizzas delivered shortly after the party started - all different types of gourmet yummy ones along with some plain ones for the kids.  I think there may have been some stombolis too.  She had big metal drink bucket with ice and various dips, dressings etc on ice and on table had veggies, chips and a big caesar salad.  They also set up for the ice cream truck to come around cake time and bought all the kids whatever they wanted.

  • Definetly stay away from anything with mayo in it or is creamy, i.e. macaroni salad, creamy salad dressings, etc.  I would do pizzas and a tossed salad with the dressing kept in the bottles.  A pasta salad should also work well.
