Finally went to the SS office and officially changed my name today! I was so surprised how easy it was - 10 minutes in & out, and I even had to fill out the application while I was there. I was expected a "DMV experience" if you know what I mean. I know I had been putting it off because of that - so if anyone is procrastinating on going, it really isn't that bad! =]
Re: Finally did it!
I knew that was what this post was about before i even read it! Yay!
And u totally know what you mean by the DMV experience, except the DMV by my house is a different kind of headache. No lines ever(weird, I know), but they really employ idiots there. I fought with them for a half hour because they said that if I really wanted to change my name I needed to go to probate court (which meant getting an attorney to sign the papers). I had my ss card in hand and was like, "why isn't the federal government official enough for you? I guarantee every married woman does not need an attorney to change her name!" she called the capital to prove to me that I was wrong and (duh) I was right. Good gravy! 30 minutes of my life I'll never get back...

Yay!
I agree that the SS office was easy. Actually so was the DMV. The place that gave me the hardest time so far was my cable company! Imagine that.
Wait....it took you 10 mins at the SS office?! I waited an HOUR and my number hadn't been called and wasn't NEAR being called, so I had to drop off my application and they mailed it back to me two weeks later. I should be getting my new SS card with my NEW name in a few weeks. But the closest office to me was in a low-income area. People looked so....miserable. It was sad.
I haven't attempted the RMV yet. I might try that on Monday. Should be fun.
You are going to hate me...but they actually called my number before I finished even filling out the application (which took me a total of about 4 minutes). Sorry to hear yours took so long!
The closest office to me is 2 hours away. They used to come to my small little town but they don't anymore. So I'm going to have to take a day off of work to do mine.
